D.K. Wilson provided the wiggle to Oxford’s offense last Friday and Keenan Britt sacked the team in the time that Oxford’s Yellow Jackets needed it most.
In the end that they’ll be able to try it all in their own home stadium in just two weeks.
Oxford ended Class 6A Region 6 play by winning 35-14 over Center Point in the game to determine the second place finisher in regional play. Oxford (7-2 5-1 region) was awarded the right to host its first round playoff game on November. 10.
The top two teams from the four playoff qualifiers for each region begins at home. Oxford will host the No. 3 seed from Region 7.
“It’s fantastic,” Oxford coach Sam Adams stated. “Any chance you have to play home is huge, particularly when you’re in Oxford, Alabama. The playoffs make the stakes higher.
“We’ll play against a good team. appears to be Athens will be the next two weeks.”
Center Point (7-2 4, 4-0) provided Oxford an early scare during the 4th quarter. Julius Finnerson’s touchdown run of 2 yards cut the lead of Oxford to 21-14 at 11:40 and the Eagles were able to recover the next short kickoff after Oxford was unable to take the ball.
Center Point took over at Oxford’s 25-yard line. Oxford’s defensive line forced fourth and third downs. Britt was able to return at home Eagles the quarterback Therman Moore after he sacked him.
“I realized we needed to come up with a huge play,” Britt said. “They tried to double-team myself, however I stayed into The A-Gap instead of entering C, because they’d been attacking me all night. Then the quarterback attempted to take over.”
The Yellow Jackets took control from there. Jaydon Thomas’s 2-yard touchdown run brought the score to 28-14 at 6:40. Then, a catch-and-run Nick Richardson’s catch and run of 38 yards to score with 3:47 remaining was the final score.
“We achieved a great job in restoring the momentum after losing it for an uncharacteristic amount in the second half” Adams said. “Keenan plays every play. We trust him occasionally perhaps a over the top in general, but when he’s performing at his peak then it’s a lot harder to beat us.”
Oxford took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter based on Mims the touchdown pass of 5 yards for Richardson and Mims two-yard keeper.
Moore’s touchdown pass of 10 yards to JaQuoryae Busby, and a conversion run narrowed that gap, which was 14-8 just before halftime. Mims’ touchdown pass of 2 yards to Camare Hampton put the score at 21-8 at 1:41 in the third.
While Wilson did not find the goal line He did make several highlight reels during the time between the goal line. He performed two stop-and-go maneuvers after a catch of 50 yards and a run to help Oxford score its first touchdown.
A yen exchange to Thomas’yang ended with 132 yards of total offense, with receiving yards of 88 on five receptions.
“We are blessed with two players that are back and play different types and kinds of items,” Adams said. “They’re an extremely athletic team and did an excellent job with blocks. D.K. did an excellent job of gaining some additional yards when it looked like the ball was being tangled up at times.
“He’d receive more than five, if not 10 and that’s the type of thing he’s done over the year.”
Mims completed the pass in 24 of 27, gaining 3 touchdowns and 287 yards. Richardson was able to gain 138 yards through five receptions and two scores.
Thomas ran for an impressive 61 yards, scoring.
“I think we’re likely to win the playoffs, and possibly be able to win the state championship,” Wilson said. “We’ve only got to be optimistic.”
