Anniston, AL – Anniston, Alabama – Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs is delighted to inform you that the Commissioner Kent Davis will be hosting an informative and interactive meeting for community members and veterans. The event will be held on the Jim and Shirley Justice Center Also called The Calhoun County Democratic HQ located at 812 Noble Street, Anniston, AL 36201 on the 10th of November, Friday at 10:30 am.
The main purpose of this event is to provide an opportunity for veterans and other community members to meet the Commissioner Kent Davis, ask questions and express their opinions and concerns. In order to make the experience more enjoyable an informal lunch will be provided. To help with event preparations, attendees are encouraged to email calcodem2019@gmail.com if they plan to attend. Even if you cannot confirm your attendance ahead of time however, you’re still able to attend the event.
The Commissioner Kent Davis assumed his role as the seventh Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs on February 19, 2019. In his current position he is responsible for the agency’s operations, oversees mission execution and oversees more than 1,200 employees of the state and contractors across 70 offices throughout Alabama. In addition Commissioner Davis oversees an annual budget for the agency of $190 million. He also oversees state benefits and other services for about 400,000. Alabama Veterans and their families.
Commissioner Davis has an extensive and varied history. The city he was raised in is Montgomery and was raised in several cities such as Atlanta in Georgia and New Orleans. As a National Merit Scholar, he went to Louisiana State University (LSU) with an academic scholarship. He obtained the Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1985.
His military career began when he joined the Navy Reserve while attending college. After graduation from LSU and being appointed an active-duty Navy officer. He was a member of the USS MISSOURI battleship (BB-63) in which he posted into Somalia and the Persian Gulf during the Iran-Iraq War. Then, he joined the airship USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN-72) as a participant in missions in both the Persian Gulf and Somalia.
After he left active duty Navy in 1994 the Commissioner Davis was enrolled in law school under the GI Bill. He earned his Juris Doctor qualification (magna du the laude) during 1998. He attended Georgia State University Law School in Atlanta. In the same time frame as well, he was a member of the Navy Reserve.
In 1998 in 1998, Commissioner Davis returned to active duty in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps as an ethics and trial counsel attorney. He eventually resigned from active duty and returned to his position as a member of the Navy Reserve, and worked as a full-time attorney at the firm that handles legal matters at King & Spalding in Atlanta. His assignments included several command posts which included U.S. Central Command, U.S. Joint Forces Command and the U.S. Sixth Fleet, and the Navy Office of Information at the Pentagon.
In his civilian life the Commissioner Davis was appointed to his position at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security immediately following the 9/11 attacks which he remained with over 14 years. He was in various positions such as being an attorney-in-charge to Secretary Tom Ridge and teaching law at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) located in Brunswick, Georgia. He was transferred to the CDP in 2006. transferred into the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) located in Anniston, Alabama, where He was Director of Legal Affairs and the Deputy Director.
Commissioner Davis was discharged from his military service in the year 2016 following more than 31 years of service. He was also Director for Economic Development and City Manager of Anniston for two years. In the last quarter of 2017, he took on the role of director of Communication and Outreach at Air University located at Maxwell Air Force Base.
In his long career as a Commissioner Davis has been honored with many civilian and military awards, and has published his academic works in legal journals as well as college textbooks and defense magazines across the country.
The Commissioner Davis has been married for a while to Lieutenant Colonel Lisa Davis, USN (Retired) Together, they have two children.
