Alabama State Senator. Josh Carnley and State Rep. Matthew Hammett recently gave three grants for community service to each of the school districts within Covington County.

The two officials both said they were grateful for the chance giving back to the communities and the students within their respective districts.

“I respect the faculty, administration and staff of Andalusia City Schools, Opp City Schools as well as Covington County Schools for everything they are doing to educate our kids and make our communities better,” Carnley said. “I am thrilled to collaborate together with my fellow member of the House of Representatives, Matthew Hammett in bringing money back home to ensure that our schools continue to offer the highest quality training for our upcoming community leaders and our workforce.”

“I am grateful for the collaboration with Sen. Carnley in continuing to raise funding for our children’s schools, schools and the communities. Thank you for being able to serve and advocate for your interests in Montgomery,” Rep. Hammett stated.

The three superintendents all expressed their gratitude for Carnley as well as Hammett for their financial support.

“We are very thankful for the grant funds received from Senator. Carnley and State Rep. Hammett. The money will be a huge help in meeting the requirements of our students as well as teachers. And as always, we’re thankful for their generosity,” ACS Superintendent Dr. Daniel Shakespeare said.

The Opp superintendent Michael Smithart said his system will utilize the money to improve educational classes in vocational training.

“We are very grateful for the money which we got by Rep. Hammett and Sen. Carnley. The funds are crucial for Opp City Schools. The funds will be used to upgrade some equipment within our vocational agribusiness program as well as to aid in the creation of a recreation space for students with special needs in Opp High School. The two Rep. Hammett and Sen. Carnley are great champions of public education and their assistance to our students at Opp City Schools is immeasurable,” Smithart said.

“We appreciate the legislative grants made available from Rep. Hammett and Sen. Carnley to Covington County Schools. These grants enable us to keep improving education opportunities, including careers tech, arts education and the development of leaders. We are grateful to them for their continuous commitment to the schools we serve,” said Covington County Superintendent Shannon Driver.
