Determined and courageous, they are willing to take on any chance they get and driven by the desire to be successful. When they sit around the dinner table with their families they’re a source of immense pride. They are celebrated as the shakers, movers and doers who strive to make a difference in the world.
Jacksonville State University has always been renowned for its warm welcome to first-generation students. Their dedication to these extraordinary individuals is heightened when Jacksonville State University is now part of the highly regarded First Scholars Network. This is a confirmation of the university’s commitment to the dreams and aspirations of their first-generation students.
On November 8th it is a day to commemorate these exceptional students First-Gen Celebration Day. The quad, buzzing full of energy between 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. it transforms into a venue for giveaways, freebies and other valuable sources, which is a testimony to the appreciation and support the trailblazers deserve. For students who are first-generation the day is not just an event. It’s an occasion to recognize their achievements and a testimony to their potential.
Later in the evening between 6 and 8 p.m. Students who are first generation are invited to attend an alumni-only dinner at the TMB Auditorium. Admission is free and an expression of gratitude to those who pioneered the way and explored uncharted territory. The dinner, however, is limited to just 50 students Online registration is essential to ensure an invitation.
Wearing business casual clothes Students will meet to enjoy a night of professional development and networking. Faculty, staff and alumni share their helpful tips on professional dining manners, guiding students how to communicate with others, network, and gain knowledge from the first-generation alumni who have followed the same road at JSU.
The university is also encouraging alumni to donate money to a student to join the dinner, which strengthens the bonds of support and mentoring that spans generations. This is a stunning example of how the community works together to lift each other up.
