Anniston, AL –First Christian Church of Anniston and Reconciling Ministries of Anniston First United Methodist Church are thrilled to present “Cafe Christmas,”” an uplifting and frequently humorous musical that delve into the complex issues of religion and family dynamics as well as LGBTQand relationships. This original musical, written with Maury Evans and Maury scheduled to be premiered in the South at the First Christian Church in Anniston from December 1 through 3rd of December, 2023.

The storyline begins on Christmas Eve, when an extreme storm leaves a traditional family with a daughter who is a teenager to seek refuge in the cafe. The owners of the cafe and their guests, a couple of lesbians who have teenagers, show the stark differences in their the way they view things. While the characters struggle with their differences and forced cohabitation the play is a vehicle to examine the beliefs as well as attitudes and values.
“Cafe Christmas” is more than an event, it’s an important step towards creating a dialogue between the community about LGBTQ+ issues. Both churches, renowned for their inclusive ethos seek to promote discussions and increase awareness of LGBTQ+ issues and the LGBTQ+ community’s rightful place in the world.
The play has multiple uses:
1. Entertainment: A wonderful mix of familiar and original Christmas tunes, “Cafe Christmas” invites viewers to think about religion and friendship in the festive season.
2. Outreach Beyond the stage the play is designed to connect with members of the LGBTQ+ community, making sure that they feel welcomed. This outreach also aims to encourage acceptance and understanding within the larger community.
3. The fundraiser “Cafe Christmas” doubles as a fundraiser, providing advertisements for the production. Businesses and individuals are able to contribute via program advertisements, and tickets are available at the door or online.
