A huge landslide destroyed three homes along an unpaved road outside of Wrangell late on Monday. Three victims were discovered dead by Tuesday evening as the search continues in search of the three persons who are still in the dark.

The KTOO’s Anna Canny is in Wrangell. She claims there’s a massive effort in place to not only find those who are missing, but also to move supplies or evacuate to those who were displaced from the slide.

Anna CannySo at the moment, we don’t have which of these names are publically released. However, we know that at the very least, two adults and a minor were discovered dead. One adult woman was saved by rescuers, and she was found at the top within the residence, which is situated on the top of the hill, which made her more able to survive We’re hearing she’s in good shape.

Meanwhile, efforts to search and rescue continue. We have learned that at various moments throughout the day there were helicopters and drones conducting aerial surveys in search of those three missing persons. There are people working in the area of the slide working on the mud, and downed trees, and chainsaws are being used by the crews are out as well as Search and Rescue dogs in the ground as well. These crews worked all day yesterday and this morning. The community has been delivering food on the roadsides for them to aid the first response personnel.

As of this afternoon we don’t have an information from the authorities about the missing persons however we believe it to be a couple of adults and children. It’s been reported that they won’t begin clearing the road until these individuals are located. After that, even when they begin clearing there’s no way to know how long it will take. It’s an enormous amount of garbage that’s being thrown across the highway. So for this moment one of Wrangell’s major routes is shut down. We’re hoping that the culprit are found in the near future. It has also created massive blockages in Wrangell.

Wesley The EarlyHow do you think that highway obstruction is interfering with things, if it does?

Anna CannyYeah So the slides, like I’ve mentioned it fell across the huge highway known as Zimovia Highway. The design of Wrangell is so that there’s a town, which is in which KSTK (radio) can be found located, on the north side. Then there’s this lengthy highway that runs to the south down the middle of these very, really high slopes. That’s the point where the slide fell. It’s about 14 miles wide. The massive slide, that we’re hearing now is around 500 feet wide was down about the 11th mile. Therefore, now clearly there’s no way to drive there.

When the slide collapsed it also shut down power and ripped down lines of land on the road. At present, some of the power is restored from the town’s center, on the northern side all the way to Mile 9 on the highway. However, there are still many households along either end of the slide that do not have electricity or phone lines.

We are aware that Tlingit and Haida have helped set up Internet connections, and people can keep in touch to a certain degree. However, the area located to the South of the Slide is accessible via boat. There are a lot of families that are isolated from the town.

Wesley The Early Years:Wow. What are the people who are on the road? What information do we have about their condition?

Anna CannySo there’s a good chance that some homes have been evacuated. They have either evacuated in the evening of, or some noticed the slide was coming down, made contact with the firefighters and escaped via boat the next nightafter which there’s been continuing evacuations all through the the day, both yesterday and today. There’s been boats moving from the northern town to the cutoff zone to the south. We’ve heard of one hotel in the area, the Stikine Inn, that’s hosting evacuatees. Some reporters from the area spoke to at least one person who was evacuee this morning. Innkeepers are anticipating more will be arriving.

Then there are a few families who are still out in the open, staying at their homesteads. There have been attempts to provide them with supplies to help them stay afloat in the desert, since they are unable to get into or out of the town without having a boat. Fuel, water, and food is one of the most important since, as I’ve mentioned the power has gone out, and those who did stay put are now running on generators. This has been a team effort on deck effort to get the necessary supplies.

(Anna Canny/KTOO)

We are aware of an unmanned boat operated by the town of Wrangell which went out a few times this morning to drop off items. Then there’s numerous boats owned by independent companies. There are summer tourist boats that were out and fishing boats. I saw a gillnet vessel on the water today. Then I took a trip with a Forest Service crew on a fuel drive this afternoon. They said that all local agencies in the area have stepped up to help in any way they can. As for they asked the Forest Service, they had boats, and they offered to use the vessels. As I said many all of them are fuel delivery. When I was there this morning, we delivered around two dozen fuel containers that will be used to power these generators.

Many donations are being received to help pay for the fuel. I’ve heard that thousands of donations have been received up to now. A local bank has set up an account just for this purpose, and the communities of Ketchikan to Petersburg and, obviously, the people from Wrangell are sending cash for the fuel supplies.

The Forest Service did one run yesterday and plans to resume their daily patrols on Friday. among all those agencies, they’re making sure that the homes stuck out there, well-stocked. However like I said it’s still a search and rescue operation and efforts to clean the road haven’t begun. There is no precise date for when the energy will come back. For now, all the families who are on the other end of the slide remain left without power.
