Arizona Supreme Court weighs future of legal abortion

If abortions are legal in Arizona is currently at the discretion of the Arizona state Supreme Court, which heard arguments on Tuesday in a matter that was filed by opponents of abortion looking to reinstate a total ban on abortions that was enacted in the Civil War, when Arizona was a territory. Lawyers representing Eric Hazelrigg, the medical director of a network of abortion clinics that are anti-abortion across the Valley and the state, urged six justices from the state to reintroduce a law dating back to 1864, which prohibited doctors to perform any abortions, except ones that are necessary to save a patient’s life or else risk two to five years of obligatory prison term…
