Jacksonville, AL – As the academic year winds down to an end, Jacksonville State University (JSU) is preparing to mark an important milestone with the commencement ceremony of its Fall 2023 semester which will take place on December 15, 2015 at Pete Mathews Coliseum. About 500 students are expected to take the stage, signalling the end of their academic experience and the beginning of the next chapter of their lives.
In the class of alumni, Ashia Hudson stands out as the first Birmingham Promise scholarship recipient to graduate from JSU. This impressive feat does not only highlight her own accomplishments, but shows the positive impact of the scholarship programs on worthy students.
The Birmingham Promise initiative, designed to offer financial assistance for graduates of Birmingham City Schools attending public universities and colleges in Alabama It has served as an opportunity for students such as Hudson. JSU’s involvement in the Birmingham Promise program enabled the distribution of more than $1.1 million to 137 students in the last three years, giving them the opportunity to attend college.
Hudson expressed her happiness and gratitude, stated, “It feels good that I have the opportunity to shine light on an opportunity that is great for students who want to follow me to profit from it and make use of it to the fullest extent. I am very happy and elated that I can achieve a positive result by accepting and utilizing it..”
Logan DeBoer, JSU’s Associate Director of Scholarships He emphasized the program’s significance, stating, “Birmingham Promise is such an effective program as it offers financial aid to students who are deserving and would not have had the opportunity to afford college. Students such as Ashia are excellent examples of how dedication and opportunities can lead to amazing achievement.”
Hudson who is slated to earn the bachelor’s in social work degree, is pursuing big plans for the next. She is scheduled to attend an Advance Standing Program for Social Work and hopes of completing her master’s program before the end of the end of December 2024.
In her reflections on her time in JSU, Hudson shared, “My JSU journey has been one that I will remember for the rest of my life. I can’t wait for what my next chapter will bring me.”
JSU’s fall 2023 commencement ceremony will be divided into three events on Pete Mathews Coliseum:
10:00 – 10:30 a.m.: College of Arts, Humanities, and Sciences, College of Business and Industry – 1 p.m.: College of Social and Behavioral Sciences
4 p.m.: College of Education and Professional Studies, College of Health Professions and Wellness
