The Rev. S. Dean Matthews aged 88, died peacefully on Saturday, December. 16th, 2023 living at home at Andalusia, Alabama.

Dean was born in Brooklyn, Alabama, on September. 29 1935 and was the son of Edmund Demetrius Matthews Jr. and Ruby Dean Matthews. Dean was graduated from Opp High School and Howard College (Samford University). Dean has been the Southern Baptist pastor for over 50 years. He stepped down from active preaching in 2018, after having served in Bermuda Baptist Church since 1999. In the past, Dean ministered to the congregations he loved in Zion Hill Baptist (Brewton), Long Branch Baptist (Cohassett), Red Level Baptist as well as churches located in Wilcox, Autauga, and Etowah counties. Dean was a fiercely loyal friend to his family and never met anyone who was not his own and was an avid outdoor enthusiast.

Dean died in the presence of his parents, his brother, Dale Matthews; and his sister, Dana Matthews Hartley. His wife for 47 years is Julia Brown Matthews; son, Quinton Dean Matthews (Amy) and daughter, Katherine Matthews Odom (Kiel) and grandchildren Mary Wellesley Matthews, William Dean Matthews, Matthew Palmer Odom, Elijah Blue Odom as well as John Michael Odom; brother, Scott Matthews (Charlotte) and many cousins.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December. 19 at 12:30 p.m. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 19, in the Andalusia Memorial Cemetery, with brother Josh Wilson presiding. The funeral service began Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m. with the Foreman Funeral Home.
