For their class project, the Covington County Leadership Class of 2022 installed three Little Birdhouse Libraries in Public Housing Authority offices, Florala, Opp and Andalusia.

The 2022 Covington County Leadership Program includes Abbe Gwaltney of Covington Charm Boutique and Yvonne Sowell of Andalusia Health.

We raised money for this project by selling snacks and drinks at many events throughout the year, including the Florala 24th of Juni Masonic Celebration, July Jamz, and the Downtown Get Down. We received donations of books from the Opp Public Library as well as other community members, which was a great support for this project. “We also received donations from Southeast Gas, Andalusia Health and Southern Independent Bank to complete the project,” Northey stated.

The program was initiated by Kelly Brandin, Opp Chamber of Commerce Executive Director. It began with nine graduates in 2021. There are 11 participants in the 2022 class that will be graduating from the program in January. The 2023 Program of Leadership class is accepting applications until Wednesday, December 28. The cost of the program is $500. This is usually covered by employers, except for individuals.

There are a number of sessions covering a range of topics throughout the nine-month program. These include local history, technology, cultural arts, local government, state government and public safety. The program’s purpose is to develop leaders and make Covington County ambassadors.

For more information, call the Opp Chamber of Commerce (334-493-3070) or visit the Covington Country Program of Leadership Facebook Page.

Brandin stated, “I am proud to be able to say that I was proud of the efforts these leaders made to see their community project succeed.”
