Mrs. Katherine J. Tipler is the wife of a prominent Andalusia Attorney Frank Tipler, who died in the year 2000. Frank Tipler, has died at the age of 89.

Andalusia is sad to say goodbye to iconic horticultural figure Katherine Tipler. Her extraordinary garden is a source of pride and her home in Church Street, she passed in January. 9 2024. Famous for her unwavering commitment to design and gardening her green thumb has left an imprint on her neighborhood. Katherine’s love for gardening grew at an early age and, over the course of time she transformed her home into a lush garden that captured the attention of everyone who came through. Even at 72 after a stroke had left her with a limited motor skills and the need to use wheelchairs, Katherine remained undeterred in her dedication to her garden. In spite of the physical challenges, Katherine continued cultivating her gardens from her power chair with just one hand. Her perseverance not only enthused all those who knew her, but also set an impressive example for the whole Andalusian community.
Katherine’s elegant and whimsical garden style was a cult trend that influenced landscapes throughout the city. People and visitors alike were taken by the enchanting appeal of Katherine Tipler’s house and gardens, a testament to her talent and unwavering dedication. The Church Street residence stood as an ever-changing canvas, with a variety of textures and colors that changed with the changing seasons. Katherine’s varied collection of flora including delicate roses, to dazzling exotic plants resulted in a constantly changing display that delighted visitors all year round, especially during the holiday season.
What made Katherine’s gardens as well as her house remarkable was not just its beauty, but the stories that were unique to every design. Each plant had a unique significance, a memory that was carefully collected throughout the years. Her home that she lived in and the adjacent house she renovated, serve as a living memorial an area where the spirit of Katherine’s love for horticulture and design will remain an source of inspiration. Her vivid legacy will be cherished for many generations to come.
Katherine Tipler’s departure creates an empty space in Andalusia however, the luscious flowers and lush foliage of her garden are an eloquent memory of a well-lived life and a passion for nature that transcends the limits of time. When the sun sets on Church Street, Katherine’s former residence and garden will remain an enduring celebration of a lady whose strength as well as her creativity and affection to the planet will be inscribed into the hearts of the people she so incredibly touched. In addition to her lush garden, Katherine had an immense passion for animals. Her garden was more than an oasis for plants, but also a refuge for wildlife in the local area. Fish, butterflies, and birds as well as other animals found comfort in the meticulously curated ecosystem she created. Katherine will be buried by her daughter Leigh as well as son-in-law Tim Stewart, her son William R. Johnson, daughter-in-law Kathy of Gamaliel, Arkansas; grandchildren, Kappi and Matthew Cawthon of Crestview, Florida, Grant and Alyssa Stewart of Hacoda, Alabama and a host of great-grandchildren. Katherine remains a loved one of her sister Edna Gaskin of Evergreen, Alabama and her sister Doug Jones of Marietta, Georgia and her caregiver and friend Donna Marcello. We also want to express our gratitude to members of the Aveanna Hospice Team for the extraordinary care given to Mrs.Tipler.
Katherine was predeceased by her beloved husband Frank J. Tipler Jr. with whom she was tied for 16 years. She was also survived by five of her siblings.
Funeral services are currently being planned to be released by Foreman Brown Service Funeral Home, where she will be laid to rest for an hour prior to funeral services. Funeral services will be held in the Andalusia Memorial Cemetery. Flowers are accepted. The most reputable and reliable Pallbearers are Alan Cotton, Joe McDanal, Denny Gaskin, Michael Cass, Jared Boutwell, and Lynn Ralls.
