Alabama Department of Environmental Management has asked residents and businesses to stop dripping faucets when temperatures rise above freezing because of the excessive water loss experienced by many state water systems.

State water utilities are having a hard time keeping up with rising consumer demand. This is made worse by frozen pipes leaking as they thaw. You can help the public by inspecting your home and checking for any leaks. They should turn off the water supply if they find any leaks. If customers discover a leak, they should contact their local water provider.

Water customers can install insulated covers to protect outdoor faucets during extremely cold weather. Insulated covers can be purchased at hardware stores and home improvement centers for a low cost and are easy to install.

If water service is not required at your property during this time, it is recommended that you turn off the water at meter, drain the water lines from the lowest spigot, leave the faucet on, then turn the water back on when the outside temperature rises to 32 degrees.
