Andalusia City Schools career coach Lauren Maynor recently coordinated Careers on Wheels for fourth, fifth and sixth graders at Andalusia Elementary School.

Maynor worked with local businesses in order to provide careers vehicles to AES. Business representatives spoke to students about their work duties and the basic tasks of the vehicles they use.

“As an instructor in the field of career coaching at Andalusia City Schools, I was very excited to extend my reach into the lower grades. I have a lot of experience working with students in higher grades and have noticed a huge need for exposure to the world of work from a young age. We had the opportunity to work with a number of fantastic local companies and individuals to organize a career fair designed for fifth, fourth and sixth graders in Andalusia Elementary. One of the most common issues that we’re witnessing in the workplace at the moment is people who are eager and eager to work and this filtered through to our event too. A number of businesses had to turn down or postpone the event due to difficulties with staffing,” Maynor said.

Maynor expressed gratitude to all who helped during the event, such as AES School Resource Officer Tessa Crowell, the school administration and volunteers.

“I am extremely grateful to everyone who took the effort to attend and to those who came in on the spur of the moment to help make this event take place. I felt that our students deserve to be informed about the jobs that are available to them, not only by reading stories or pictures but also by experiencing a real practical experiences. What I didn’t anticipate was the amount of fun that students would have. I could hear giggling and horn honking for about two hours,” Maynor said.

Participating organizations included Covington Electric Cooperative, Foreman Funeral Home, the City of Andalusia’s Waste Department, Andalusia Utilities, LBW Career Cruiser, Asset Management Partners, Andalusia Fire Department along with Advanced EMS.
