The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Unit 80 in Andalusia, offered scholarships to five students from the area to attend Girls State as well as giving scholarships to four students.
The event this edition of Girls State took place from Sunday on June 4 through Friday the 9th of June, on Troy University’s campus. Troy University.
Students from each high school within the county were chosen to participate in a week-long “laboratory of the practical aspects of government policies, citizenship, and other aspects.”
The five students whose tuition was paid by the Auxiliary included:
- Alyssa Anderson from Florala High School
- Liz Ann Jackson of Opp High School
- Briley Douglas, of Pleasant Home School
- Kennedy Lord of Red Level School
- Cora Wyrosdick of Straughn High School
Its American Legion Ladies Auxiliary also granted a total amount $2000 to 4 college students from the region.
The scholarships were given for the following pupils:
- Chasey S. Sanders who is currently enrolled at LBW Community College
- Julie Ann Heninger, who is enrolled at an University of South Alabama
- Claire N. Ledbetter, who is currently attending Troy University
- Mary Madison Crenshaw, who is enrolled at in the University of South Alabama
The Ladies Auxiliary’s purpose is to support the families of veterans and the communities they live in. The funds for scholarships and projects are raised through volunteers who help in the Legion’s weekly bingo games.
