Andalusia Chamber of Commerce continues its April Clean and Green Initiative with the opportunity for residents and businesses to get rid of electronics that are not needed.
In progress and running through the 21st of April, which is Friday, Certain electronics are available to drop in the Wednesday or Thursday, from 9 a.m. until four p.m. as well on Friday, from 9 a.m. until noon. There will be no drop-offs outside of these hours. The program is totally free.
The company has an trailer in the AACC office in 700 River Falls St., where unwanted electronic devices could be tucked away. This Pensacola company is run by John and Ginger Watkins, the latter being a native of Andalusia resident (formerly Ginger Petty). The Coastal E-cycle offers businesses medical institutions schools, government agencies and people with a secure and easy option for the safe disposal of old and unneeded electronic equipment, all while ensuring EPA compliance. The company ensures that the data stored on devices is completely destroyed.
Based on AACC executive director Laura Wells, the need for responsible disposal of electronics is a requirement across the entire community.
“A number of people have contacted us for advice on how they can dispose of their old electronics. They don’t want to throw these items into the garbage to be taken to the landfill, so they’ve held on to it. We’re thrilled to provide our community this opportunity,” Wells said.
The items that are that are accepted for e-cycling are cables and satellite boxes mobile phones, power strips circuit boards, DVD/CD/cassette players hard drives, tablets and iPads as well as laptops, monitors, laptops printers, small household appliances including telephones, flat-screen TVs as well as video game consoles and many more.
Things that aren’t acceptable include monitors for CRTs, televisions with CRTs glass bulbs, batteries for household appliances and large household appliances.
Chamber’s Clean & Green campaign comes to an end on a Saturday, the day that coincides the celebration of Earth Day. In the course of the month, members of the chamber are competing for an award of “Trash Collector of the Year.” The initiative, Clean Up Covington County is a joint venture that the chamber has with Alabama People Against a Littered State (PALS). The winner of the event will be announced on an online Facebook broadcast on Earth Day. The company that takes care of the most garbage wins the title.
“There was a lot of excitement and competiton for this year’s contest, and we are looking at revealing who won at Earth Day. We would like to thank everyone who is taking part to keep Andalusia sparkling as well as green” Wells said.
