With a huge crowd present, Andalusia claimed a 10-3 victory over Straughn on varsity baseball Tuesday, February. 21.

The Bulldogs remain undefeated and move to 4-0 for the season. The Tigers were 0-1 after their opener of the season.


Dylan Jackson and Cody Walsh left with an out at the middle of the first. Jack Lathrop delivered a two-out RBI single, and scored Jackson to score the game’s first run. Following a walk by Jake Coon, Riley Cravey hit into an error that permitted Walsh to score to give the team the lead of 2-0. Clark Gay eluded further damage when he threw Lathrop on the plate in an attempt to score. Saxby Radford opened the bottom of the inning by hitting a roaring double. Conner Brooks then picked up two strikeouts, and made the score at 2-0 following one.


Parker Adams pushed the lead to 3-0 after an RBI double in the second inning. He added by courtesy the runner Connor Dalton. Gay was struck by a ball in the second half prior to a 4-3 double play. The teams did not score in the third despite single-out hits from Lathrop as well as Kaden Wiggins.


Andalusia extended the lead by 7-1 thanks to an impressive middle of the fourth. Adams scored on Cravey as well as Mason Weeks with a two-run single. Emory Melvin replaced the mound to replace Straughn as Walsh played into an unassisted double play with bases loaded. However, two runs were scored in the process. Zayd Rogers was able to score via an error in final frame of the inning before another double play concluded the game.


Cravey scored a double with two outs in the fifth inning, but failed to advance when Melvin hit Meeks. Dalton took over on the mound in favor of the Bulldogs while the Tigers reduced the deficit to 7-3. Wiggins was struck by a pitch , and drove home Wiggins with the first hit. Taylor Sikes scored on a fielder’s choice after Layne Grantham hustled to the plate following a ball that was passed. Both teams scored nothing in the sixth, as the score was 7-3 to the end of the inning.


AHS came up with an out-and-back rally that included 3 runs at the seventh’s top. Garrett Blackston scored on a wild pitch and Meeks hit an RBI homer to the right fielder to take an 8-3 advantage. Mack McIntyre kept SHS alive by hitting a single to the right side of the second half of the game however a fly-out was the final score of the game.


Lathrop and Meeks both scored a.300 mark in the field, for Andalusia. Tycamren Jackson went 3-for-4 and Adams ended up going at 2-for-5. Brooks took the victory by pitching four shutout innings. He only allowed two hits, while striking out four. Wiggins and McIntyre led Straughn at the plate box with a score of 1-for-2, and Radford as well as Melvin were each a perfect 3-for-3. Gay was the loser and gave up five hits (three earned) with four hits over three innings.


The Tigers will take on Luverne on Thursday, Feb. 23 on the 23rd of February at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs come home and will play Opp on Friday February. 24 on Feb. 24 at 5 p.m.
