Andalusia Health received nominations for the Winter 2022 DAISY Award. Registered nurse Leigh Smith was named as the winner.
“It is a great honor to be recognized for my dedication and hard work in nursing. Smith expressed appreciation for Smith’s nomination and the opportunity to receive this prestigious international award.
Smith is a licensed emergency nurse and pediatrics nurse. She embodies the PETALs attributes of passion, empathy, teamwork, admirable attributes, love of nursing and admirable attributes. She was nominated for her attention and concern for making patients feel as comfortable as possible.
In memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from ITP at the age of 33, the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses has been established. Because Patrick’s family was so impressed by the nursing skills and caring of his nurses, the Barnes family created the international award to show their gratitude.
DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem Award) is an international recognition program that recognizes and celebrates the compassionate, skilled care nurses provide every single day. After J. Patrick Barnes died in 1999 from complications caused by the autoimmune disease ITP, his family established the DAISY Foundation. They were deeply touched by the kindness and care Patrick received during his hospitalization. They felt the need to publicly express their gratitude to nurses after Patrick’s death. The DAISY Nurse Leader Award honors exceptional nurses for their compassionate patient care. Any nurse leader that directly impacts patient care, including nurses who are educators, supervisors, or managers, can be honored.
She works hard in the emergency room, and she also goes back to Troy University to complete her bachelor’s degree. She enjoys the speed of the emergency department, and the adrenaline that comes with helping as many people as possible. Melissa, her sister, is her best friend. According to an Andalusia Health press release, her motivation is to improve and be a role model for her children.”
She is married to Michael Smith and has three children, Addy, Lilly and Emmy. She spends her free time with family and friends.

Andalusia Health is an acute care facility with 88 beds that has been serving the heart of South Alabama’s south since 1966. It was awarded the Thomson-Reuters Top 100 Hospital in 2005, 2007, and 2011. The Joint Commission also has accreditation for Andalusia Health. The hospital provides a variety of surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic services. Comprehensive cancer care can be found on the Andalusia Health campus. The services are provided by 21st Century Oncology, which offers radiation oncology, and Sacred Heart Oncology which provides chemotherapy and infusion services.
