The Andalusia Public Library is bringing children from all across the world together through an emphasis on friendship, kindness and unity for its Summer Reading Program 2023.
The program for the year starts next week and will run until the end of June.
L.A. Children’s Librarian Caryl Lee Ray has stated that reading in the summer will set the stage for the success.
“Kids who don’t learn to read or develop their skills during the summer months can lose up to two months of reading gains. The library is a great place to prevent the loss of learning during summer and helps children to acquire the necessary skills to begin the school year in a positive manner. We are thrilled to return to enjoy another fun summer with the entire family and assist them in enjoying the pleasures of reading by providing enjoyable activities and planned events,” Ray said.
The library has a wide selection of books for kids of all ages with different levels of accessibility for everyone.
“As they get better every time they read a great book their confidence and enthusiasm improve. When they face new challenges in school, they say”I can handle this. Highly skilled readers do better in all subjects. The secret to success is to read for pleasure,” she added.
The SRP will begin with the Drums Be-at-Your-Best event on Wednesday, June 1 beginning at 3 p.m. Animal Tales will return a week later on a Thursday, June 8 beginning at 1 p.m. for children ages eight and under, and at three p.m. for those ages nine and above. A storyteller with a ventriloquist voice will be available at the library on Thursday 15 June from 3 p.m. After a quiet week The McWane Science Center is scheduled to end the year’s celebrations on the following Thursday, June 29 around 3 p.m.
“Our personal goal this year is “I” in nature. We are delighted to be bringing back the annual events which the kids really love being part of. We will be having our regular Preschool story Time every Friday on the calendar starting at 10:10 a.m. A new thing we’ve added this year that we look at is the introduction of two Film Mondays that start at 1.30 p.m. in June 5, and 12″ Ray said.
More than 1,500 children participated in the summer’s Summer Reading program in the libraries. Research shows that those who read regularly acquire the necessary skills and confidence to be successful in all grades. Reading books from libraries help children develop the habit of reading to relax and reap rewards of school and beyond.
“There is no better motivation than getting lost in an author’s book, feeling that you’re a part of the story and experiencing each story as if it were your own. The library guides children towards this experience step-by-step, to help them build strong bonds to exceptional and appropriate books for their age.”
