The Covington County Board of Education has approved Carie Turman to be the new Florala Principal of the High School, and 18 other personnel items in a special meeting on Monday, May 22.

Turman was appointed interim principal of FHS in February, following the sudden death of Max Whittaker.

The board also authorized:


Retirement

  • Scott Gafford as teacher at Fleeta Junior High School effective at the close of the 2022-2023 school term.


Resignation

  • Angelina Driver as teacher at FJHS beginning at the close of the 2022-2023 academic year.
  • Taylor Kelley as teacher at FHS until the end of the 2022-2023 academic year.


Rescind

  • Hire for Shanna Davis as an elementary school instructor for the elementary school at Straughn Elementary School, effective immediately


Permission to Absence

  • The grant of a medical leave of absence, with the benefit of the Family Medical Leave Act to Joea McNeil Stuart, counselor at FHS for the month of May


Transfer

  • Brianna Leitschuck from math teacher at FHS to math teacher at W.S. Harlan Elementary School, effective the beginning of 2023-2024 academic year.
  • Elisa Dye Mount from counselor/special education teacher at WSH to special education teacher at Red Level School effective at the start of the school year 2023-2024.
  • Troy Turman from teacher at FHS to math intervention/physical education teacher at FJHS effective at the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year


Employment

  • Melody Blount as a staff assistant at WSH starting at the start of the school year 2023-2024 in the event of verification of any recent or current background checks
  • Samantha Lockhart as elementary teacher at WSH starting at the start of the school year 2023-2024 in the event of verification of any current or new background reviews
  • Shelby Stephens as bus driver at RLS in effect from the beginning of the 2023-2024 school term until the verification of any the validity of any new or existing background checks
  • Anna Harrelson as math teacher at FHS in effect from the beginning of the 2023-2024 school term until verification of the current or new background reviews
  • Charlette Petre will be a Science teacher at FHS in effect from the beginning of the school year 2023-2024 until verification of the either background or new reviews
  • Clayti Morgan Norris is the mathematics teacher in FJHS in the beginning of the 2023-2024 school term until verification of the current or new background reviews
  • Christy Clanton as elementary teacher at SES starting at the start of the school year 2023-2024 until the verification of any the validity of any new or current background reviews
  • Leila Kirkland will be the elementary teacher Leila Kirkland as elementary teacher at SES in the beginning of the school year 2023-2024 until the verification of either background or new reviews
  • Joni Bozeman as the lunchroom manager at FJHS starting at the start of the school year 2023-2024 in the event of verification of any current or new background reviews
  • Sarah Allen as counselor at beginning of the 2023-2024 school year until the verification of the validity of any new or existing background checks

In addition the board also honored track and sports teams as well as track athletes who are from Red Level School and Pleasant Home School. Dhilan Patel is an incoming Student in Straughn Middle School, was also named the state spelling bee’s second-place winner. The board decided on the date of its next meeting for June 6, at 5:30 p.m. at the office centrally located.
