Five softball players from the area are teaming up to organize an all-season softball camp for children ages 7-15 in Johnson Park on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning June 12 through July 18 between 8 and 10:00 a.m.
The price will be $180 per session, or just $20 for each session.
“Fundamental skills will be reviewed and practiced each week. Participants will be taught drills such as throwing, glove work outfield, infield, batting as well as pitching and base running. Learning skills early will give every player to build a base build on and will provide the an understanding to be able to apply and use throughout the year. Learning in these areas is essential for young players who wish to learn and grow in how to play softball.” Willie Furr said.
Elizabeth Cross, Maggie Furr, Mollie Furr, Leanna Johnson along with Erin Riley will serve as camp instructors.
“Leanna Johnson is an outstanding Division I player who had an incredible experience through Troy University and earned Pitcher of the Week numerous times. Johnson brings a unique perspective to the team and has fought and defeated some of the most difficult players in this sport .”
“Maggie Furr is a current student on the team at Enterprise State Community College. She also plays left field, and played in high school and travel ball for several years. .”
“Erin Riley, a slugger, and a current player at Southern Union State Community College. She is an amazing player at shortstop and in the outfield. She has a wealth of playing experience as a player, and a solid understanding regarding the game .”
“Mollie Furr”, who is a Birmingham Southern College commit, and Elizabeth Cross, a William Carey University commit Both lefties are extremely fast on the base tracks. They also pitch and have a range of skills and defensive strength that is awe-inspiring. Both of them will begin their college careers in the fall .”
Based on Furr Giving back to an activity that the girls were a part of is a vital aspect of the whole process.
“Each of the girls who coach have years of experience and have experienced some of the most amazing coaches during their journey. The variety of players who have years of experience under the guidance of numerous coaches has enabled them to acquire a vast understanding about the sport. Sharing their experience with young players is crucial for the development of softball. Our top college and high school players started their careers playing rec ball,” the coach said.
The purpose for the camps is to generate more interest and expand the game.
“Softball is the fastest growing sport in America. Girls who wish to participate should have the chance. It is a tough sport, but extremely rewarding. It’s about feeling part of something greater than us. Inclusion, belonging and diversity, as well as teamwork are the key elements to a winning attitude. .”
