The Covington County Commission approved three appointments, and also approved the resolution that allows for participation in the next state’s tax holiday due to severe weather at its regular meeting on Tuesday on October. 10.
administrator Karen Sowell announced that during an upcoming gathering of the Personnel Review Board, two members had decided to step down from their posts.
“We have two members who wanted to leave the board. Their term ends on July 15th, 2025. Therefore, we need two persons to fill in the unfulfilled term. These are usually four-year contracts however, we’re in need of two people to cover the remaining term,” Sowell said.
Applications are received at the County Administration Building up to Wednesday, October. 18 until five p.m.
“The plan is to look at applications and filling the vacant slots during the next session later in this month.” Chairperson Greg White added.
The commission voted in favor of re-appointments for Dist. 1 Commissioner Kenneth Northey and Covington County Engineer Lynn Ralls to serve on the Wiregrass Resource, Conservation, and Development Council. Northey and Ralls are serving two-year terms.
“Both of them have been serving for a while and both are eager to be appointed again. The county engineer has served on the council for as long as I remember,” White said.
Commission also voted to approve the appointment of Billy Joe Stallworth to serve on the Department of Human Resources Board.
“This is a state-owned agency, however they employ local boards to provide control and direction on the offices. DHR serves many demands of people within our county and we’re grateful for what the office is able to do. Billy has served multiple years on the board and does an excellent job. He has been faithful to his presence and participation. He has a strong leadership style and I would recommend that you re-appoint him to this post,” White said. “If the candidate has performed well and people are pleased with what they see in him I propose to reappoint him again,” Northey added.
The commission voted to take part in the 2024 Severe weather preparedness Tax Holiday. This Code of Alabama states the holiday starts with the time of twelve-one a.m. at the end of Friday, which is final full weekend of February and is over by midnight on the Sunday following. More details will be made public when it becomes available.
“I propose that to adopt this resolution. We’ve always participated in the process, and it’s beneficial for those who live in this county,”” Dist. 2. Commissioner Michael Smith said.
The commission has approved an invitation to bid to provide inmate communications.
“We are getting close to the end of our current contract, and are reviewing bids for inmate communications. We’re looking to tailor the bid to meet our requirements and, once we have the bid approved and ready then we’ll kick it into high gear,” Sheriff Blake Turman explained.
Next meeting of Covington County Commission Covington County Commission is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, October. 24 at 9 a.m. in Covington County Administration Building. Covington County Administration Building. Everyone is invited to attend.
The next meetings will be held on the Tuesday of November. 14 and Tuesday 12 December. 12. There will be no second meeting between November and December.
