The Opp Chamber of Commerce accepts applications for the 2023 Covington County Program of Leadership.

Kelly Brandin, Opp Chamber Executive Administrator, will coordinate the program’s third anniversary. In 2021, the inaugural leadership class was made up of nine graduates.

This program’s mission is to develop leaders and make Covington County ambassadors. Deadline for submission of completed applications for the program has been extended until Wednesday, December 28th. The cost of the program is $500. This is usually covered by employers, except for individuals.

In their first meeting, applicants for 2023 will meet Jan 26-27, 2023. The meetings will take place on Thursdays from January to November, with the exception of June and July. These are reserved for community projects. On a date yet to be set, the 2023 class will graduate January 2024.

The class will vote on and propose a community service project that can be completed during the summer and winter when it is not meeting. The facilitator will be one class member, but the project will be managed by all class members.

“I enjoyed every moment of this program. It has taught me so much about myself, my workplace, as well as other people. Do not let your age or lack of experience stop you from doing it. I would fight for a place next year. Take this leadership class next school year if you are able. It will be a great decision that you won’t regret,” Abbe Gwaltney, a 2022 participant from Covington Charm, said.

The Opp Chamber of Commerce organizes the nine-month program that includes sessions on local history and technology, cultural arts, state and local government, public safety and health, education, diversity, agriculture, forestry, and economic development. The program’s purpose is to develop leaders and make Covington County ambassadors.

The following criteria are required to be eligible for the program:

* Must be a resident of Covington or have worked/volunteered in a Covington County organization or business for at least six months.

* Must be at least 21 years of age

* Possess satisfactory evaluations from a current employer with support from said business/organization.

* Attend all monthly sessions, including the initial orientation, local focus and leadership sessions.

* Write testimonials for the program’s Facebook Page.

“The 2022 Covington County Program of Leadership was an eye-opening experience. Anyone who is interested in a more global-focused outlook can benefit from this program. Southeast Gas participant Tyler Wingard said that if you ever wanted to see the inside of what it takes for a community to thrive and work, this is it.
