The Andalusia District 5 elected the Dr. David McCalman to a fourth term on the Andalusia City Board of Education on Tuesday.
McCalman beat Shawn Geohagan, 144-to- 6.
The race for District 5 was the only race that was on the ballot. Sammy Glover was unopposed in his run for re-election in District 1.
In District 3 District 3, incumbent David Bryant chose not to run for his reelection. John Wells was the only candidate that was eligible to run for office.
McCalman stated that he was grateful for the help provided by the staff of his district. He looks forward to serving pupils from Andalusia.
“I thank everyone who came out and decided to vote,” McCalman said. “It is very humbling. Helping our schools is incredibly important for me. I appreciate the people who came out and the people who took the time to assist me. It’s a different kind of election, where we have one month’s notice. This is a single-election race that you don’t get to see often, and I thank those who decided to attend and vote. .”
He also said that the board is eager to continue the work of the board on current as well as future initiatives that are beneficial to both the community and students.
“I am convinced that we are seeing many exciting and positive developments taking place in the school systems we have. I’m glad to be able to keep working on these projects. As a team, we have areas that we must to improve, and we would like to improve those areas we’re doing quite well,” McCalman said.
McCalman is particularly thrilled to work with fellow school board members and administrators to expand the STEM curriculum.
“It’s an amazing time, with higher test scores and the launch of a new STEM lab coming in coming days. We’ve hired a top STEM instructor and are continuing to work to make improvements in this area. It’s important for the students we teach, however it’s equally important for our community since it goes far in helping our students to be prepared for the workforce when they graduate,” he said.
McCalman together as Glover and Bryant will be officially sworn on November 1st.
School board members serve through staggered year. The incumbents of the Districts 2 and 4 would go being re-elected within two years.
