Edna Mertha (Ellis) Carter was born as the eldest of twins to Ernie Mac Ellis and Euna V. Ray on 13 March, 1936. Mertha passed away to her heavenly home on the 5th of March 2023 following an entire life of service to Christ.
She passed away peacefully, at her home, in the company of her family members. At the time of her passing she was 86 years young. Mertha was born into farmers located in Sanford, Alabama, and was raised to become an entrepreneur on her own and with her lifelong partner James Edward Carter.
Mertha was predeceased by her parents, Ernie Mac Ellis and Euna V. Ray Ellis; her twin brother; and her dear close friend Mervin Ellis. Mertha remains with three brothers: Cody (Judy), Hank (Sue) and Shane eight grandchildren including Dr. Brandy Truelove, Austin (Ashley) Carter, Krystal (Brandon) Johnson, Anthony Carter, Asia (Michael) Dutton, Hannah (Tyler) Holloway, Tiarra Carter, Mikie Carter, Angel (Klint) Short as well as Ari Carter, and 15 great-grandchildren.
Mertha was a incredibly dedicated and generous woman who worked for Christ in a faithful way throughout her life. She was an active part of Harmony Baptist Church. She was very humble and generous throughout her life. She taught her children to live an active life of giving and gratitude. The close relationship with her family was an experience she was proud of every day. She was incredibly happy for her grandchildren and children for their achievements over time. The way she lived her life inspired for everyone who knew her.
Funeral services took place on Wednesday, March 7, 2 p.m. at Harmony Baptist Church with interment in Harmony Cemetery. Brothers Greg Cotter and Brother Scott Donaldson were the guest speakers, and Foreman Funeral Home directing. Visitation began on Tuesday around 1 p.m.
