Forecasters warn residents to be prepared for cold temperatures, as lows could reach the teens this holiday weekend.
According to the Covington County emergency management agency, an arctic coldfront is expected to move through the region Thursday night into Friday morning. This will bring a much colder mass air. The interior is expected to see temperatures in the teens and twentys on Friday morning. Temperatures elsewhere are forecast to be below freezing. Strong northwest winds will also make it feel colder, with wind chill values in the single digits or negative across the northern parts of the region.
High temperatures will be near or below freezing on Friday in most of the northwestern areas of I-65. Wind chill values for most of the region are in the teens and twentys.
Friday night will be the coldest day in the region. Lows are expected to drop to 10 to 20 degrees north I-10 and to the coast to the upper teens or low/mid-20s. In areas further from the coast, wind chill values will be in single digits Friday night through Saturday morning.
Similar overnight temperatures are expected for Saturday and Sunday night, but they will be slightly higher by a few degrees each evening. Daytime highs will gradually moderate as well. Saturday and Sunday’s highs will remain in the 30s with the coast being closer. Temperatures will rise to the lower 40s and 50s by Monday.
It is possible for temperatures to drop below freezing in some areas north of Highway 84 on Thursday night or Friday morning. Temperatures may not rise above freezing again until Sunday afternoon.
Warnings and hard freeze watches are expected to spread rapidly in the next 36 hours. A possible wind advisory will be issued on Friday due to the arctic front. Gale warnings are also expected to be issued in the marine area.
