Five Covington County players were chosen for be part of the Alabama Sports Writers’ Association’s 2023 All-State High School Football Team which was made public on the weekend of Dec. 23.
The All-State Team features first and second teams as well as honorable mention athletes in all in the 1A-7A classes in addition to members of the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA).
Nominations were submitted by coaches from across the country and their own sports journalists. The nominations were then voted on by the ASWA’s preparation committee. The players must be recommended by their coaches before they are considered.
Andalusia was home to two seniors in the class 4A. Lineman of the offensive Kol Petrey was a part of the First Team Offense. Lineman defensive Landen Marshall was selected as a member of the First Team Defense. The Bulldogs ended the season with a an overall record of 10-2 and progressed into the 2nd round of state playoffs under the veteran trainer Trent Taylor.
Florala additionally featured two players from Class 1A. Senior player Rayshon Coleman was selected for the 1st Team Offense, and was among the four players who were listed as an athlete. The junior wide receiver Elijah McMeans was selected for the Offense of Second Class. The Wildcats were 7-4 during the season, and also made an appearance in the first round of playoffs as the head coach Jordan Cantrell.
Straughn has one student in the class of 3A. A senior defense back Parker Black was selected on the 1st Team Defense. The Tigers were 10-2, on the season and claimed their first region championship in 14 years under the direction of head coach Ashley Kilcrease.
