Florala High School’s Daniel Green recently heard that he’d been named Alabama’s Football Coaches Association’s Class 1A Assistant Coach of the Year.
The winners were nominated by an ALFCA member ALFCA and was recommended by a group, and chosen through a vote by the ALFCA Board of Directors. The winners will be recognized during the ALFCA Coach of the Year Luncheon on Saturday, January. 27th, 2024 located at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Montgomery. The winners will be presented with a Coach of The Year plaque and a Coach of Year ring from Balfour.
“I am truly humbled getting nominated for this prestigious award. I am expressing my sincere appreciation for being so honored. This honor is truly a blessing for me. But most importantly it is a testament to the extraordinary efforts and commitment of our team members and coaches. I consider this award an affirmation of the hard work and dedication of all those involved within our team. Without the outstanding players and the co-operation of my coaches, this feat wouldn’t have been possible. The players are those that truly deserve to be recognized for their tireless commitment to their game,” Green said.
As an 2005 Auburn University alumnus, Green has a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture. He takes great pride at helping Wildcats attain success academically as well as athletically.
“I’ve had the privilege of working with a great group of athletes who are a force on the field, day in and out. Their determination, resilience and enthusiasm for playing have been the driving force behind every achievement we’ve made. It’s a celebration of their talents and the positive culture that we’ve created. In addition I owe a large amount of gratitude to my coaches. Coaching is a team effort and the success for our group is a outcome of our collective knowledge and commitment to excellence by every member of the coaching team.”
According Green Green the team’s knowledge and encouragement from the coaching staff and their commitment to each other contribute to the team’s achievements.
“In the end this award is not an individual achievement, but rather a celebration of the whole team’s accomplishments. I’m extremely thankful to be a part an impressive group of individuals as coaches and players that are the ones who have helped make this recognition possible. It’s a pleasure to be a part of their team, and I’m looking forward working with them in the future, trying to achieve even more success in the near future.”
After finding out the list, Green was both humbled and overwhelmed by emotion.
“My initial react was one that displayed profound gratitude for the acknowledgement however my mind quickly changed to the amazing team of coaches and players I have the honor of working with. It was a time of reflection on the teamwork that have brought us to this point. I could not help thinking about the dedication determination, commitment, and camaraderie that make up our team. My happiness was rooted in the successes we’ve shared that we’ve enjoyed and the development we’ve seen together during the year. I’m still enthralled by the passion and dedication every team member contributes to our team. This honor serves as a reminder the positive outcomes we accomplish when we collaborate to achieve a common goal.” he added.
If he’s not playing on the field, coaching or painting the fields to prepare for the game, Green can be found in the classroom. He taught agriscience to Florala high School students for 16 years and was a coach during 12 seasons.
“Serving as an assistant coach of the Florala Wildcats is an immense source of joy for me, and it can be traced back to the amazing players that comprise this team. This Florala Wildcats community has made my job as assistant coach extremely rewarding. The feeling of unity and shared goals among the players has helped create an environment where everyone has a stake in one another’s success. This bond extends far beyond the playing field and is the basis for the positive environment we’ve created with each other. As a member of the Florala Wildcats is about being part of a tight-knit community that is united to celebrate successes and is there for one another when faced with challenges.”
Green is a fan of making an impression on players the most.
“Witnessing their development as athletes, as individuals, is extremely satisfying. It’s more than just winning and defeats in the game. It’s about creating a supportive environment that allows them to develop important life skills like cooperation, perseverance and sportsmanship. Coaching lets me be a part of the growth of young athletes and assist to unlock their potential. Coaching is more than just the basic X’s and o’s of the game. The true sentiment of community and possibility of making an impact on the lives of these athletes are the elements of coaching I value the more than anything else,” he said.
The community’s love and support team’s support are very important for him on an individual level.
“The Florala Wildcats community plays an integral contribution to the development and growth that the group. It is more than individual accomplishments and focuses on the journey we share together. It is encouraging to be a part of the Florala community isn’t just about losses and wins. The encouragement and support of the Florala team and the community is the driving force behind the positive and successful mood we’ve built. I am thankful for the support.”
As Green continues to move forward the main goal of Green is to use the recognition to elevate his team. He believes the acknowledgment is a testimony to the teamwork of coaches and players rather than an individual accolade.
“I believe this is an chance to shine the spotlight on the extraordinary talent and commitment of our athletes. I plan to utilize the platform as a way to showcase their accomplishments and their contributions to the sport. I intend to make use of this honor to build the teamwork of our players, creating an environment where each person’s experience is appreciated and each coach plays a role in the team’s accomplishments. I hope that this recognition is an inspiration for further successes to all the Florala Wildcats as a whole.”
He thanked everyone who are around him for their ongoing loyalty and support.
“As I consider receiving an award for 1A assistant coach of the year award, I am overwhelmed by gratitude. For my wife Amy Thank you for your love, devotion and support since the beginning. To my coaches, your unwavering commitment and collaboration as well as your the shared dedication to our players has been the foundation of our team’s success. I am humbled to be part of an extremely competent and supportive team of coaches. The players’ enthusiasm for hard work and determination both on as well off of the playing field motivate me on a daily basis. This honor is a testimony to your extraordinary talent along with the trust-worthy team environment that we’ve created with you. For our Florala group, thank you for your constant loyalty is the lifeblood of our team. This award is yours the same way it belongs to me. This award doesn’t concern me, it’s about the amazing people that make up this Florala Wildcats family. I am grateful from the deepest of my hearts,” Green said.
FHS Director of Football Jordan Cantrell feels Green is an exceptional, unique person with a job that is never-ending.
“When I got hired as a teacher, the Mr. Max Whittaker explained to me everything Coach Green does at the school. When I arrived there, I realized what a unique person he is. There have been numerous head coaches that have come through but he’s been the constant leader and coach that everyone admires. As the coordinator for defense, he. He manages cut, fertilizes and lines softball, football, as well as baseball field. He also oversees the agriculture tech and FFA programs. FFA. I have been teaching and coaching for the past 17 years and have never met any coach that does this as much. He truly is the best I’ve seen,” Cantrell said.
