It’s 2023! Covington County high school football season kicks off this week, with two games during the regular season and the preseason jamboree.
Andalusia at Opp
Andalusia will go to Opp to play a game of rivalry in the 93rd annual game between the two teams on August 24, 2014. The game will be a battle between two coaches with 480 total wins. The Bulldogs have the advantage in all-time series against the Bobcats 52-36-4.
Trent Taylor enters his 36th season as a whole and his ninth as a player at Andalusia with 267 wins in his career. Matt Brunson leads Opp in his debut season. He has 213 wins in his career over 25 years at three different schools located in the Florida panhandle.
The Bulldogs have won 16 of their last 17 games since 2005. The Bobcats have won their last game in the opening round of the playoffs back in 2009, which was the only occasion when the two teams played twice in the same season.
Andalusia was the host of the 2022 game and won 35-7 against Opp.
Pleasant Home vs. A.L. Johnson
Pleasant Home will host A.L. Johnson again for a second time in a row this year on August 25. The two teams first played in the previous year. PHS has a 1-0 advantage in the series that was short.
Cody Sellers enters his fifth year in total and his second as the head coach of the Eagles.
Pleasant Home defeated A.L. Johnson at the 2022 championship, beating him 41-6.
Red Level at Straughn
Red Level will travel to Straughn for an event that will kick off the season on Friday, August 25. Both teams have played during their regular seasons 32 times during the modern era, with SHS having a lead of 19-13 in the match. The game won’t be counted towards any team’s record for the entire season.
The two teams will face off for the fourth consecutive year following their first annual game in both 2020 and 2021.
Kenny Skipper enters his seventh season overall, and all associated with RLS. Ashley Kilcrease will be in his eighth overall season and his third season at SHS.
Straughn won the jamboree game at home, beating Red Level in 2022, 49-7.
