The Ft. Novosel, also known as Ft. Rucker, helicopter was unable to operate due to mechanical issues while conducting instruction in Covington County on Wednesday afternoon.
According to law enforcement officials in the area the helicopter was flying between 4 and 5 miles to the southwest of Andalusia close to Red Oak and the Oakey Ridge and Red Oak communities. Initial reports stated that the helicopter was struck by gunshots.
Mike Irwin of the Covington County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday around 3:55 p.m. that the plane wasn’t hit by gunfire, but was hit by mechanical problems instead.
The pilot was capable of landing the helicopter, and then take it back the way to Ft. Novosel. Thankfully, there were no injuries to the passengers of the helicopter.
The Covington County Sheriff’s department responded and is helping Ft. Novosel officials with the investigation.
