During the most recent Covington Region Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., the guardians and veterans of the Covington Region were joined by an Florala family that experienced their own unique occasion.


37 volunteers and veterans took part in the trip over the course of a day.


Patty Hughes from Florala, who is a member of the Florala local Honor Flight committee, got to invite her son, USAF Lt. Colonel Tyler Hughes, and his wife Ann and their son of three years Landon for a visit to DC for the trip. The family of her son are within Washington, D.C. Washington, D.C. area.


When Honor Flight members and the Honor Flight group was experiencing the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery, the Hughes family toured the Military Women’s Memorial, located near the entrance of Arlington and where an event of special significance was held.

USAF Lieutenant. Colonel Tyler Hughes, a 2003 graduate of Florala High School, had the honor of putting the rank symbol upon his wife newly promoted U.S. Space Force Lieutenant Colonel Ann Hughes. Their three-year-old son, Landon, waved a small American flag while his proud Mom-Patty watched the ceremony.


Lieutenant. Colonels Hughes and Hughes together with their son Landon took part in all of the time with local Honor Flight group.

The 29th of April, Saturday was a long, but memorable day for all who took part in the Honor Flight, especially the veterans who were given a rousing greeting upon arriving on the Reagan National Airport. The group traveled via bus from Andalusia departing around 2.30 a.m. to travel to Pensacola towards Washington, D.C. The group returned home at around 11:30 p.m.
