Janice Eiland Castleberry, age 91, passed away at the feet of the Lord on December. 14th, 2023 at an Dothan hospital after a short illness. She was loved and respected by all the residents of Covington County.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, December. 18 11 a.m. in the Buck Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Boles officiating. Interment will be held in Buck Creek Cemetery. Buck Creek cemetery. Visitation will begin an hour prior to the time of service.


Mrs. Castleberry was born on June 22 1932, at Loango Alabama, to parents Olin T. and Bonnie L. Hartzog Eiland. She was a student at Loango through the 2nd grade, and then completed her education in Red Level. The class of 1950 was named the Valedictorian in her Red Level Class of 1950.


On October. 4 1952, she was married Johnny Castleberry. They had two daughters, Janna Castleberry Foshee and Jeff Castleberry. She was extremely proud of her four grandchildren: Margo McIntyre Sharpless (Brad), Megan McIntyre Sasser (Jason), Marcus McIntyre and Taylor Castleberry and her three great-grandchildren Mitchell Sasser, Marley Sharpless and John Holland (Land) Sharpless.


Mrs. Castleberry was”the “first-lady” in Covington County Commission District #4. She co-operated together with husband Johnny who was the commissioner for the district for a period of 20 years. She was always eager to bake her scrumptious Cream Cheese pound cake and serve it to community members.


Janice worked at Red Level School as an office assistant for more than 25 years before retiring on June 30 in 1995. When she met the former students Janice often said, they were “one of my kids.” There’s no way to count the number of good actions she’s performed to help the students at Red Level School that we’ll never be able to remember.


She also enjoyed being known to the public as “The Trash Lady” and “The Blood Lady.” Mrs. Castleberry was actively involved in The Covington County Chapter of the American Red Cross, where she was involved in various blood drives, hurricane-related recovery efforts, and other local aid offered provided by local assistance provided by the American Red Cross in the Covington County area. She was appointed an honorary life director on the board for Covington County Chapter of American Red Cross where she has been serving for more than 30 years.


Following the 1990 floods after the 1990 floods, after the 1990 floods, Mrs. Castleberry was the driving factor in establishing the Covington County PALS (People Against an Unclean State) to ensure that the roads and the waterways of Covington County clean from litter. Her efforts included the distribution of bags of trash to any person or any group who wanted to be a part of a specific region of the county and commit that they would “Clean-up!” She promoted recycling and said, “I am a firm advocate of recycling and I will ensure that we are taking care of the resources God has blessed us with to this earth. .”


Janice can be described as a dedicated active and enthusiastic volunteer. She was an active member in the Pilot Club Andalusia and also was a volunteer at the Andalusia Chamber of Commerce in the area.


Mrs. Castleberry was a regular part of the Buck Creek Baptist Church. She was a member of the church’s nursery as well as was a Sunday school teacher. Her daily mantra is: “Each day I’ll try to perform a gold-plated deed.” .”


The deceased was her husband Johnny and parents Olin as well as Bonnie Eiland, and her daughter, Janna.
