Opp got off to the most impressive start in the history of the program and kicked off the season by sweeping 3-0 of New Brockton in a varsity volleyball match at home on Tuesday, September. 5.
The Lady Bobcats moved to 10-0 overall and 1-1 for 3A Area 3 with a 25-22 25, 25-12, 25-15 victory. It was a loss for the Lady Gamecocks fell to 3-7 overall and 0-1 against teams from the area.
“We are having a difficult time with the final game, letting it go and then letting them return however they were quite well overall. 10-0 has never happened before in Opp and that really means a lot to us. This is by far the most exciting beginning Opp volleyball has had in its history and I’m extremely happy for the girls. The girls are hard-working and are not just good volleyball players and athletes however, they also communicate as a group. It is it is a team sport and these girls are able to work well as a team,” stated OHS Director of Coaching Caiden Harrell.
SET ONE
Opp recorded the opening one point of the contest and extended an advantage to 7-2 thanks to an ace and aces by Shelby Greenacre. New Brockton reduced down the gap to 8-4, but Ada Blackstock began a 7-0 streak with a crucial block. Madie Wilson scored back-to-back aces as well as Carnley Johnson as well as Carreline Spears each had one kill to give the team an advantage of 15-4. Aniya Barkley added two kills, bringing her score up to 17-8. Spears came back by grabbing two aces in succession and made it possible to open an advantage of 20-9. Anna Blackmon had two aces and a kill in the Lady Gamecocks fought back to close to within three at 23-20. Amaya Womack smashed a raging kill for a set point, while The Lady Bobcats held on and gained a 1-0 advantage.
SET TWO
Opp had a lead of 4-2 during the set’s second, but Cuba Wiggins started a 7-0 run by claiming an ace. Blackstock added a second block, extending the lead to six points. Womack hit back-to-back kills, giving him a 11-2 advantage. Spears added 14-4 when she smashed a kill. Barkley took New Brockton within single digits at 14-7. The score did not last long as Megan Pinson capped a 7-1 surge with an ace, giving New Brockton the advantage of 21-8. Blackmon also scored an Ace at the 22-12 point however, Wiggins completed the set by securing a block and an ace to take the lead of 2-0.
SET THREE
The two teams played back and forth throughout the third set, and eventually forced four tie-breakers. They Lady Bobcats then broke away by a 10-0 run. Wilson as well as Brooke Butler each connected for an ace. Spears added another kill and extended their lead up to 14-5. Wiggins continued to show her dominance with three kills. Isabella Grissett also had one. Wiggins’s third kill during the final stretch increased the advantage to 21-9. The Lady Gamecocks battled to get back within eight points at 23-15 before Spears was able to kill a match point. An error in attack ended the game.
Wiggins played the lead in Opp in kills with 8 and 2 blocks along with four digs. Spears scored two aces, 5 kills and 13 assists along with six digs. Blackstock Womack and Blackstock Womack each had four kills. Megan Pinson grabbed 10 digs during the victory.
Opp will return to the court on Monday, September. 11 in an at-home tri-match against Geneva as well as Pleasant Home starting around 4 p.m.
