Meredith’s Miracles is now accepting donations for its annual “Every Penny counts” close of the year appeal and is seeking help from the general people to contribute to the cause.
Every year, thousands families across Alabama have to deal with the possibility that their child or infant needs due to a medical condition. In many cases, treatments for children with medical conditions are only available at hospitals such as Children’s Hospital in Birmingham or USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital in Mobile.
“When this occurs, families who already feel stressed have to have to figure out how to get accommodations while they are away from their homes as in addition to paying for the costs of fuel and food. While some families might just make a couple of trips, other families may be faced with the requirement of traveling more frequently in the case of cancer or sickle cell treatments. Families who have a child in the NICU facility may also be faced with the need to travel between the two facilities for months. In the case of many families, those extra expenses can be a major burden and put them in a dire financial situation.” The Meredith’s Miracles executive director Kiley Spears explained.
This is the time when Meredith’s Miracles helps families who are in need. There has been an rise in need for help.
“This year, requests have risen significantly. In 2021 we gave $114,858 to 584 trips. We also provided $157,341 to 911 trips in 2022. We raise money throughout the year through grants and events; however in the current amount of requests, more funds are needed to support families to get through the end of the year.”
A donation of $2,500 may assist in the payment of the following costs:
- Day trip: $75 for the trip for 10 days $1750
- Meals: $25 per day for 6 days $150
- Overnight trip: $300 per person for five nights The cost is $1,000
- The NICU costs $300 per child for two babies up to $600
“As we get closer to the close of the year, and think about the positive things that have happened in our lives, think about helping families in their times of need by contributing to Meredith’s Miracles. Together, we’ll ensure that every dollar is counted. Any donation, regardless of size can make a difference,” Spears added.
