The Oleander 2 Civic and Social Club and the Oleander Club’s legacies will host its second annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Career Fair.
This event will educate the residents of Covington County, and other surrounding areas about the many opportunities offered by HBCUs. In order to provide educational, job, and internship opportunities, the group has partnered with Lurleen Wallace Community College Forestry Department and U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service.
The event will take place Saturday, January 7, 2023 at LBW Community College, from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
In 2004, the Oleander 2 Civic and Social Club was established. It advocates for the rights of all members of the community through programs and services that promote empowerment in education, health and economic equality. The club is open to partnering with community organizations that are interested in supporting the pursuit of educational and career opportunities for our community.
The club’s partnership with the Forest Service and the generosity of individuals and businesses resulted in two internships for parents at the fair in 2022. A student competed for and won a $160,000 USDA 1890 Scholars Scholarship. Many students also benefitted from the essay presentation, which allowed five students to receive scholarships from Oleander Club and Oleander 2 Civic and Social Club, as well as several other local scholarships.
The club’s partnership agreement with the USDA Forest Service, and their Memorandum of Understanding with Lurleen Wallace Community College for more than $400,000 allows the event and organization to help with outreach efforts to reach out and expose underserved communities and diverse group and to provide educational opportunities at HBCUs.
“This year’s event will offer many of the same opportunities to participants as well as students and parents to attend separate Lunch-and-Learn sessions that will be led discussions with current and former graduate students of HBCUs, and parents of recent or current HBCU graduates. A club representative stated that this event offers a great opportunity for all community residents, especially students, school counselors, and parents.
Attendees of the college and job fair may register for the event on GoToCollegeFairs, gotocollegefairs.swoogo.com/oleanderspring23.
