A chef from the area competes against other chefs across the country and has already won the backing to go to the final five voting rounds in order to be able to make it into the quarter-finals in the contest.
Dave Palmer, a resident of Paxton and a former restaurateur who operated Dave’s Cafe and Gifts in Paxton close to the state boundary from Florala.
Palmer is among the contestants in “Favorite Chef” hosted with Carla Hall.” Chefs from all over the nation are vying to be named Favorite Chef 2023, which includes a prize of $25,000 as well as a two-page ad within Taste of Home magazine, and a one-on-one cooking experience with New York with celebrity chef Carla Hall. The competition also functions as an event to raise funds for The James Beard Foundation, a non-profit organization with the goal to honor, empower and promote the individuals that are behind America’s culinary culture.
To move forward in the competition, and possibly take the grand prize, Palmer seeks support from the community by voting for him online at chefdavepalmer.com/vote. The quarterfinals began on Monday and will run until the 3rd of August.
Palmer has already defeated the other competitors by 92 in five rounds. However, he will require additional support in order to keep progressing in the race.
“When I was the manager of Dave’s Cafe and Gifts, many of my customers were out of the Florala and Lockhart region. I also provided lunches to the employees in Florala High School weekly. Friends of former clients who’re friends have been the driving force behind my performance in the competition and I’m still here because of them.” Palmer said.
Palmer started his culinary journey during his time in college to save money by not dining out.
“I realized that I could cut down on my spending by cooking at the kitchen in my apartment instead of dining out at all times like my friends,” he said. “They began coming over and sampling my food as I was trying out new recipes, and they referred to my name Chef BoyarDave. Then I realized food is my passion language at the time as I feel immense pleasure from cooking for other people. All of them convinced me to open the restaurant and, around a dozen years later, I finally did.”
One of his most favorite meals to cook for guests is pizza. “It’s food that’s intended to be shared and is able to be altered in order to meet the individual tastes of everyone who enjoys it.”
Palmer already has an idea of how he plans to make use of the $25,000 prize should he be the first to finish.
“I am aiming to cooking in every state. I’ve already made it to Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and South Carolina. I’ll take pictures in Alabama later this year, along with my mother in Montgomery and following that together with Caleb along with Jennifer Davidson for the Cancer Freeze in Florala. I hope that Florida is the ultimate victory celebration!” he said.
He is hoping to finish his goal before the 50th anniversary of his birthday, and then follow by the publication of a book that chronicles his adventures.
Palmer has said that if he wins the race, he will celebrate with his family and friends who backed his victory by throwing a celebration in Paxton with dishes that are throwback to his previous restaurant.
“It’s really touching the amount of local support I’ve received,”” Palmer said. “Most of the support locally comes from patrons of my former café and it’s amazing that they continue to remain loyal to me even after the cafe shut down. That’s why I’m putting together an event for them should I do win. To be able to celebrate with those who have shown me such gratitude would be the icing of the cake. I am so excited to see everyone at one location again, and, of course, cook for them once more,” he said.
