The Covington County Revenue Commission has announced the annual property tax for the county are due on Oct. 1st, 2023.

In the words of the Revenue Commissioner Church Patterson, property tax notices will be mailed out at late September. Anyone who doesn’t receive their notice by beginning in the beginning week in October should call the revenue office to make changes or verify their contact details.

Tax payments for property should be paid by in October. 1 until December. 31st, 2023 in order to avoid additional penalties and charges. Tax payments can be sent by mail or online through www. covcounty.com (following this link “Pay Property Taxes”) or brought to the office of the courthouse. There is a 2.35 percent fee for convenience will be added to all debit and credit card transactions. Officials will ask you to verify that the address and contact information are accurate when making payments.

Applications are currently being sent out and must arrive by beginning of the week of October for applicants who have specific homestead exemptions. People who are eligible for the homestead exemption are those who are older than 65 years old or permanently and completely disabled. The exemption is valid each year. If you fail to submit the special homestead exemption form on or before December. 31 will result in the forfeiture of the exemption in the tax year following.

Any person who bought the property or purchased an investment property through an estate plan or other vesting instrument during an fiscal year (Oct. 1 to September. 30,) who is not more than 65 years old and who lives in that house is eligible to apply for an exemption for homestead. The month you live in determines which tax year you’ll receive the exemption for homestead. This exemption is only available for parcels that are 6 acres or greater with homes present, or 5 acres or greater on acreage that is vacant in the event that it is the property is eligible.

Taxes are calculated on tax rates based on the State of Alabama mandated reappraisal of the property as well as the study of the state’s sale ratio for properties in Covington County in 2022. In addition, the State of Alabama requires reappraisal of property values every four years, and trends in annual sales ratio studies.

The hours of the Revenue Commission’s office are from Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Office hours will not be open during holidays on October. 9 November. 10 November. 23, 24, and December. 25-26.
