Shaw Industries Group, Inc. (Shaw) as well as Lurleen L. Wallace (LBW) Community College welcomed six apprentices who were students on a recent signing day ceremony.

Students from the LBW Industrial Electronics students have officially pledged to mechatronics technician training in Shaw’s Andalusia manufacturing facility. The skilled trades are the center of attention, Shaw and LBW Community College held a signing ceremony to highlight that technical training is essential to as well as career advancement.

“Apprenticeships are crucial to our workforce development as well as the management of talent needs. Community partners, like LBW Community College, help us to find and develop the most skilled colleagues,” said Brian Cooksey Shaw’s director for workforce development. “These learners are on a great path and I am thrilled to see them accept these roles. I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to all of them for their dedication to creating an improved future for their families and for Shaw and our community.”

Shaw Industries is Covington County’s largest employer, employing more than 90 employees employed on Plant 65 in Andalusia. This plant is a cutting-edge manufacturing facility that makes fiber used for commercial and residential carpets.

They were selected by a process of application that was competitive and will work with Shaw associates to complete a formalized training program and work experience. This will be accomplished by completing a program by a team of Shaw as well as LBW instructors.

“Shaw is an important employer and a great community partner. They provide our students with an invaluable experience, which helps them prepare for their careers in the future,” said Chad Sutton director of the workforce development department for LBW Community College. “These students will go through an extensive set of competencies that are documented throughout their apprenticeship. This is a comprehensive program that provides our students with amazing experiences, which include the opportunity to mentor and train for the journeyman position.”

The apprentices who accepted the posts on the signing day included Joseph Turner, Lorenzo Cardo, Graham Jackson, Jacob Hammac, Jayden Nearor and Paulk Smith.

We’re thrilled for what the future holds for you,” said Brent Floyd Shaw, of Shaw’s Andalusia Site Manager. “We are extremely proud of our partnership together with LBW Community College and the efforts we’re putting into to train, educate and recruit locally-based talent.”
