In advance of Labor Day weekend, the State Parks Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) has issued additional fire safety precautions for five State Parks in the southern region of the state such as Covington’s Frank Jackson State Park.

Overnight guests and visitors in Gulf, Meaher, Bladon Springs, Roland Cooper and Frank Jackson state parks are advised to be extra cautious when using barbecue grills or campfires under the dry conditions of the moment.

“As park visitors prepare for the coming Labor Day holiday, we request that they be aware of the recent dry and hot circumstances in consideration when planning grilling and campfires” stated Greg Lein, Director of ADCNR’s State Parks Division. “Those conditions have increased the danger of wildfires in state parks throughout south Alabama. We urge park visitors as well as visitors staying overnight to remain careful with grills and campfires in this time until we receive some much-needed rain and temperatures cool down. .”

Additional fire protections in Gulf, Meaher, Bladon Springs, Roland Cooper and Frank Jackson state parks are some of the following

  • No campfires are permitted outside of designated picnic areas for day-use and campgrounds, or in developed recreation areas.

  • Barbecue grills as well as gas-fueled stoves can only be used in designated areas for day-use picnics campgrounds, or in developed recreation areas.

  • Don’t use gas or barbecue grills in areas that could cause scorching the lawn, cause damage or burn or picnic tables.

  • Grills should be placed within 15 feet from any explosive material, like grass or weeds, wood chips and brush.

  • Never leave the campfire grill to go unsupervised.

  • Completely put out all fuels that burn, including charcoal or wood prior to disposal within the fire pit, fireplace or barbecue grill.
