Straughn did not manage to overcome a difficult day of shooting and 27 turnovers. She lost against Pike County, 42-14, in the South 3A Girls Regional semi-finals at Montgomery’s Garrett Coliseum on Saturday, February. 18.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 22-8 overall and qualified for the regional championship game against Houston Academy. They Lady Tigers had their 12-game winning streak ended and they finished the season with a record of 17-9.
Amity White as well as Auriel Moultry both converted a layup within the first minute, giving PCHS an 4-0 lead. Allyx Williamson scored SHS on the board with a one of her free throws at the 4:47 mark, but that was the sole point SHS could score in the frame. White scored seven more points in the following seven minutes and sank three points. Moultry also added two foul shots to give the team an 11-1 advantage after just eight minutes.
Urriya Berry Moultry Urriya Berry, Moultry Taniyah Green all made it to the hoop, and increased the lead to 19-1 at 5:51 during the 2nd. Blakeley Smith then followed with two-for-two at on the line for charity. Berry was able to score an easy layup after Green completed the second half of two free-throws. White completed the first quarter with a three-pointer and the score was 25-3 by the time the intermission rolled around.
White took up the place she left off and hit a long three just 30 seconds after the three. Green shot a jumper, and Green Williamson made a free-throw. Berry was the second to make baskets on behalf of the Lady Bulldogs, and White made the layup. Williamson scored three more points in the final time drew closer and it was the Lady Tigers faced a 36-7 loss heading into the fourth.
After layups from White, Green, and Moultry extended it to 42-7. PCHS did not get a goal for the rest of the way. Maddie Williamson made the first SHS field goal of the game with just 2:53 remaining during the 4th. Presley Bates sank a free throw to cut the score to 42-10. Smith got a rebound along with two free throws before the game came to an end.
Smith led Straughn by scoring six points, while Williamson scored five. White was the highest scorer in Pike County with 13 points. Moultry and Berry were next with eight each, then Green who scored seven.
