Straughn was able to defend its court at home and scored an 3-0 win over the rival Andalusia in the varsity volleyball game on Thursday, August 31.

The Lady Tigers improved their season record to 3-3, with the 25-11, 25-18, victory over they fell to 3-3. Lady Bulldogs fell to 3-3.


“Our players just got into their heads for a bit and once you get into your head to think that playing volleyball is an intellectual game and you don’t have the ability to play that way. I was extremely satisfied with how they battled against the odds to win and win a great game. We defeated Geneva in the evening on Tuesday, and that is 4A and is located in Andalusia’s region. I think we’re at the right place to begin working towards playing in the area and be successful,” SHS Head Coach Deidra B. Burleson told the media.

SET ONE

Ora Hall made the opening point of the match by hitting an ace, as Straughn was able to take a 3-0 lead. Molly Capps put Andalusia on the scoreboard with a kill. Kyleigh Jackson delivered a kill to give Straughn a 4-1 advantage. Aces in succession from Claire Howe and a kill by Mallory Hall pushed the margin out to 10-3. Marge Duffy, and Taya Newton reduced down the gap to 11-6 by scoring deaths against their Lady Bulldogs. They Lady Tigers responded with an 8-1 run and were able to take a 19-7 lead. Two kills from Audrey Lindsey, and an Ace from Presley Melvin opened up a advantage of 22-9 until the game ended at 25-11.

SET TWO

Howe got a kill and Hall had two aces to give Hall an 6-0 advantage at the end of set two. Cape Merrell notched a block and made it 6-1, but Howe added a kill to give him an 8-2 advantage. Andalusia recovered and cut its deficit by 12-8. Blakeley Smith had two kills. An Ace by Hall and a kill from Jackson increased the gap to 19-10. Capps took the score to 19-12 after an ace, however, Straughn took advantage of the momentum and took a lead of 23-14. Newton started a four-point streak with a kill. However, the two final points were scored in the opposite direction to give Straughn a 2-0 advantage in the game.

SET THREE

The two teams fought back and forth during the set’s third. Merrell also added a block, and forced a 2-2 tie. Newton brought the score to 4-4 by committing an unforced kill. It was the Lady Bulldogs took an 11-8 lead after a block by Merrell. They Lady Tigers grabbed a 12-11 lead after an ace and kill from Hall. Kamari Gay was able to tie the score at 12-12 after a block, and kicked off a 6-0 surge. Kills by Jackson, Hall, and Howe brought the score down to 18-16. Bri Toney handed Andalusia the advantage with a 21-18 score thanks to an ace before Straughn finished off 7-0 runs. Smith scored a kill to give a lead of 23-21, but Hall reached match point by hitting an Ace.

The two teams will be back in action on Thursday, September. 7 around 4 p.m. Andalusia will host Kinston while Straughn will be heading to Brewton to take on T.R. Miller.
