Seven softball teams from the region will gather on Straughn High School to play in Straughn High School’s Annual Kirsten L. Dean Memorial Softball Tournament scheduled for March 3, 2015, Friday and on March 4.
SHS organizes this tournament each year to honor Dean who was an athlete and student for Straughn. Dean suffered injuries in a car crash in April of 2004 and passed away from injuries. Dean’s Lady Tiger softball program decided to pay tribute to Dean with a special tournament at the school. The event was first introduced in the spring of 2005.
The 2023 tournament will start by playing a round-robin tournament, with all games played at the Straughn High School softball field. Teams from home and away will be determined through the flip of a coin. Alongside Straughn the other six teams will be competing, which includes local team Florala as well as Red Level. Carroll-Ozark Highland Home, McKenzie as well as Zion Chapel complete the tournament field. The winner will also be announced since the three-time champion Andalusia will not be participating this year.
It will have a 60 minute time limitation for all round-robin games. Elimination games on the Saturday will take 70 minutes to finish the game.
The round-robin program for the 3rd Friday of March is as the following:
- Straughn vs. McKenzie, 2 p.m.
- Straughn against. Carroll-Ozark 3:15 p.m.
- Florala vs. Zion Chapel, 4:30 p.m.
- Highland Home vs. Carroll 5:45 p.m.
- Red Level vs. Zion Chapel, 7 p.m
The round-robin program for the 4th of March, Saturday, is as the following:
- Florala vs. McKenzie, 8 a.m.
- Red Level vs. Highland Home 9:15 a.m.
Single-elimination brackets will take place on Saturday following round-robin competition. Teams will be seeded from 1 to 7 according to the following criteria the overall record, head-tohead as well as the number of runs allowed and runs that have been scored. All games in bracket play will be played at SHS.
The seed with the highest number will be the home team in each single elimination game, which will be in the following order:
- Game 1 – Number four seed vs. number five seed, 10:30 a.m.
- Game 2 – No. 3 seed against. the sixth seed, Noon
- Game 3: Number two seed against. the seventh seed 12:30 p.m.
- Game 4 – No. 1 seed Game 4 – Number one seed vs. the winner of game 1 3 p.m.
- Game 5 – Game 2 winner vs. Game 3 winner, 4:30 p.m.
- Championship Game 5 winner will play. the winner of game 4 6 p.m.
The entry fee is $10 per day. Passes for the tournament, valid for both days are available for purchase at $15. Tickets are available in the event’s gate. For more information, contact the office of the school at 334-222-2511.
