One time, while traveling to South Florida we stopped to feed coins in a small box and watch a live duck perform on a miniature piano. Since I was a kid, I loved to travel and look at houses, yards, produce stands, and other things along the way. It isn’t like that when you travel the interstates. I seek out things that stimulate my imagination to overcome boredom.
As I was thumbing through my notebook, I discovered my notes from a North Carolina trip. I noticed that you could find Flowery Branch Roads and Sprout Springs Roads off the North Georgia interstate. My imagination took me along for a while. What kind of flowers would you find on these branches? The road would be lined by peach and pear trees, putting on a spectacular spring show if it lived up to its name.
Sprout Springs Road brought back memories of a dirt road that I used to travel with my parents on Sunday afternoons. It took us to a hole in the ground that had water running out. It was cold but it tasted terrible because it was an artesian well containing sulfur water. The signs also pointed to Hollywood’s unincorporated community.
A sign directed motorists to Mud creek Road as they drove down the road. Next was Big Panther Creek, Chattahoochee Forest. One sign indicated that the Tiger community was close. It is likely that there are some friendly people in this particular neighborhood of north Georgia. They are located in Welcome Lane. We noticed signs that directed traffic to Rabbit Creek Roads, Turtle Creek Roads, and Moonshine Creek Roads as we crossed into Western North Carolina. We also found a route to Apple Blossom Lane.
We saw Eagles Nest Road as we drove around Lake Junaluska. As one might expect, it did not. It reminded me of an eagle protecting its family. It brought back memories of our family’s visit to the Eagle’s Nest in the mountains of Germany.
We also saw some other eye-catching signs at a prominent location, in addition to the directional signs. One sign was large and read “Let’s get together at my house before Sunday’s game.” It was signed God.
If you put your imagination to use, even interstate travel can be enjoyable.
