Montgomery, AL –Our attorneys will be prepared and prepared when the law goes into effect in September. (Montgomery) — Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall today applauds the passage of SB143. The new law offers punishment enhancements for felonies in order to enhance the interests of any criminal organization or group.
It also imposes mandatory minimum sentences to possessing or using firearms in the commission of specific crimes and guarantees that those 16 or older are charged as adults in the event of a violation of these laws. SB143 was authored by senators Will Barfoot and Representative Allen Treadaway.
The bill was unanimously approved in the Senate and was ratified by the House with a majority vote of 95 votes to 6. The law will go into effect on September 1st 2023.
“In the next few weeks I’ll be announcing the formation of a group composed of prosecutors, investigators and experts that will be focusing only on the enforcement aspect of this law,” said Attorney General Marshall. “We will also set up an opportunity for law enforcement officers in local areas across the state. We didn’t create and push for this bill to boast that we had done something to solve Alabama’s problem with violent crime. We intend to show tangible results.”
The Attorney General said “The legislator deserves a huge amount of credit for taking this idea seriously. I am particularly impressed by the support from both parties has been received.”
The Chief of Law Enforcement for Alabama Attorney General Marshall was the leader of in this legislative session to fix shortcomings in the state’s penal justice system. He led initiatives to curb crime gangs and to improve punishment time for prisoners. In April 162 Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police from across Alabama called on the legislature to adopt SB143.
