Birmingham, AL –Governor Kay Ivey received the long-awaited report of the Governor’s Commission on Teaching and Learning when she attended the Alabama Association of School Boards Convention in Birmingham. The announcement of the report was greeted with enthusiasm and pride by Governor Ivey, who highlighted education as the top priority for her.

“Improving education is a constant goal since the Inaugural Address I delivered,” stated Governor Ivey looking genuinely happy with the achievements. “Today I am extremely in awe of the steps we’ve made. Our commitment to education has taken us on an a remarkable journey of transformation.”

In her remarks the Governor emphasized the hard work of the Commission in four key areas that include quality instruction and education, supporting for schools with low performance and high poverty Data gathering and reporting, as well as increasing retention, recruitment and growth at Alabama’s elementary schools.

“These recommendations are not simply guidelines. They’re an outline to improve Alabama’s standards in education,” affirmed Governor Ivey. “Our objective is to put Alabama as one of the 30 top states in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) which will ensure an era of opportunity and aspirations are encouraged.”

The commission was established through Executive Order No. 730 in the year 2000, The Governor’s Commission on Teaching and Learning was comprised of an array of experts. Their goal, which culminated in an advisory report, was to increase the education quality in Alabama on the 1st of December 2023.

The Commission members are made up of a broad spectrum of education-related stakeholders, including the Dr. Joe Morton, President of the Business Education Alliance and former State Superintendent of Education who serves as Chair, along with legislators, educators, and representatives of parent-teacher associations.

In the Convention at the Convention, Governor Ivey acknowledged Governor Ivey’s appreciation for Dr. Morton’s leadership and presented him with a certificate of appreciation for his management of the organization.

The recommendations and report offered by the Commission are a major move in Governor Ivey refers to as her “Ongoing determination to improve learning quality and education standards in Alabama which could signal a revolution within the state’s education system.”
