Montgomery, AL – As the year comes to an end and it is time for the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is getting ready for the year-long “12 Days of Safety” Campaign that will start on the Thursday of December 21 and run until Monday, January 1st, 2024. The holiday campaign aims to educate citizens and encourage an environment of safety during the holiday season by providing important information on safety and security.

Secretary Hal Taylor emphasized the significance of individual actions. He said, “Often, the smallest of actions can cause an impact that ripples out and can have an immense impact. We must all include safety in their plans for the holidays and spread the word because you truly are the best present you can give to your loved ones.”

The campaign will concentrate on the various dangerous driving habits and will focus on preventing impaired or drunk driving. According to the data of CAPS Center for Advanced Public Safety (CAPS) impaired driving caused 505 crashes and killed 260 people at the hands of Alabama by 2022. In 2023 impaired driving was involved in 498 traffic accidents, resulting in the loss of 154 lives.

Alongside addressing unsafe driving habits, ALEA urges people to prep their vehicles for the holiday travel by examining important components like tires, antifreeze levels brakes, oil and hazard lights. To increase the likelihood of being prepared an emergency kit with items such as a flashlight and emergency blanket as well as jumper cables, a cellphone chargers and water is suggested.

Colonel Jon Archer, ALEA’s Director of Public Safety, urged everyone to put safety first on the roads. “We would like everyone to be safe on the road and welcome the New year with a promise to ensure safety is the top priority throughout this year.”

Officially, the holiday traveling season is set to last nine days starting around twelve-one a.m. on 24 December, and ending at midnight on Monday January 1. In this period, the Troopers of ALEA will be conducting various enforcement actions, such as checks for driver’s licenses and equipment in order to stop unsafe driving habits.

“12 Days of Safety “12 Days of Safety” campaign will address a variety of subjects each day, such as vehicle safety seat belt protection, driving distracted drunk driving, road safety in rural areas pedestrian safety as well as speeding.
