Southside, AL – Alexandria senior scores 1,000 points on the year in the process of ensuring Valley Cubs advance; Oxford, Jacksonville girls also victorious in opening games of the area tournament.

Jordyn Walker passed 1,000 career points at the age of 1,000, and Alexandria defeated Lincoln 72-23 during the Class 5A, Area 12 tournament Tuesday. It was a great day for the Valley Cubs. Valley Cubs will play host Southside in the Friday’s 6 p.m. championship game and earned a place in the next round of sub-regional play. Walker scored 21 points, and hit at least nine free shots in 12 attempts. Jill Cockrell hit four 3-pointers in her way to 16 points.

Oxford 77, Fort Payne 50 Justice Woods poured 21 points, slamming two 3-pointers, while Oxford was able to overcome slow beginnings to move on to Class 6A, Area 13.

The Yellow Jackets, reigning 6A state champions, secured their spot in the sub-regional round . They will host Gadsden City at six p.m. match for the championship.

Just after passing the 1,000-point milestone in career, Xai Whitfield added 12 points on Tuesday. LaMya McGrue had 15 points.

JaMea Gaston scored a team-high 3 pointer, and she added nine points.

JACKSONVILLE 53.WHITE PLAINS 44In the Class 4A area 10, Alexis Phillips led three Jacksonville players who scored double figures, scoring 14 points. DeAsia Prothro scored 13 points and Neveah Nicholson added 11.

Jacksonville has advanced to the Friday’s Jacksonville advanced to Friday’s p.m. the area championship game, which will be played against the host Cherokee County. They will play host to Cherokee County on Friday. Golden Eagles also punched their ticket to the sub-regional final.

White Plains hit nine 3-pointers Tuesday and was led by Braeton Moran’s four on his way to scoring 14 points. Cooper Martin hit three and scored 11 points. [read more…]
