Alexandria, AL – A new era for Alexandria baseball begins with a win as Valley Cubs beat Haralson County (Ga.);Oxford defeats Bob Jones, Hoover

The Zac Welch time period of Alexandria baseball has gotten off to a successful beginning. Brodie Slaton hit 2-for-3 with three runs. Valley Cubs pitchers spread out five hits in seven innings of an 8-2 victory over Haralson County (Ga.) on Saturday.

Welch is an assistant coach for a long time and an ex- Alexandria star in both football and baseball was named head coach of baseball when Andy Shaw retired in Alabama and joined two other former Alexandria coaches, Frank Tucker and Jason Johnson in various roles at Haralson County.

Brayden Thacker was the first to start Saturday, allowing one hit and four strikeouts in three innings. Andrew Allen pitched the final two innings, giving up one hit and four strikeouts. Alexandria will face Jacksonville at home on Tuesday.

Oxford wins two

In Hoover, Oxford rebounded from the loss on Friday to Hartselle on the opening day. They defeat Bob Jones 8-2 and Hoover 5-3 in the PBR Kickoff Classic on Saturday. Carter Johnson doubled and drove in three runs to beat Bob Jones, and Roby Brooks doubled and drove in an extra run.

All-Calhoun Class 4A 6A Champion County athlete of the season Hayes Harrison pitched the first five innings, distributing four hits and only one run earned, zero walks, and four strikeouts. When he faced Hoover, Hudson Gilman had two hits and an RBI. Harrison And Sam Robertson had the other two RBIs. Peyton Watts, Gilman and Eli Bozeman combined to limit Hoover to three runs off nine hits. Watts hit five batters over the course of four innings, while Bozeman was able to strike out three batters in the two final innings. [read more…]
