Seven athletes from high schools were announced as finalist for the Alabama Sports Writers Association player-of-the year awards, the organization announced today. The is a list that includes Jorda Crook from Class 3A girls and Ranburne’s Briley Merrill as well as Pleasant Valley’s Macey Roper in 2A girls Spring Garden’s Ace Austin in 1A girls Jax’s John Broom in 4A boys and Pidmont’s Alex Odam in 3A boys and Faith Christian’s Thomas Curlee in 1A boys. Crook, Austin, Broom and Odam are all repeat finalist.

State sports writers voted on the ASWA All-State team on March 9. The team was announced on Sunday. Writers also cast votes for player of the year winners, Super All-State and Mr. and Miss Basketball. Winners Super All-State, Super All-State, as well as Mr. as well as Miss Basketball will be named at a luncheon on April 6, a event hosted by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association.
