Calhoun County, AL Calhoun County, Alabama Day one of the baseball championship is in full swing in Choccolocco Park … six games played back-to-back on the famous field; scores will be updated as the day progresses.
DONOHO 9 WEAVER 2:Nic Thompson got up from his slide following the three-run triple that shattered the game in the sixth inning. He then hit his helmet with his bat on the ground, and unleashed a primal scream. Thompson’s strike resulted in an 8-2 win and Lucas Elliott followed with an RBI double for the final score. “We were pretty much in a funk throughout the entire game, and I was an electric feeling here,” Thompson said. “I tried to ignite some sparks there.” Donoho broke a 2-3 tie with 2 runs during the 3rd.
The win earned the sixth-ranked Falcons an opportunity to play in the quarterfinals against No. third Piedmont on Monday, at 6:30 p.m. The Falcons will likely play either Peyton Webb or Blake Sewell Donoho coach Steve Gendron said. “It’s likely to be a great game,” Gendron said. “They’re an excellent team. They’ve obviously been able to enjoy a number of wins. I believe we’re a great team, and we’re eager to compete against the team next Monday.”
Weaver finished the county championship with a 1-1 record, beating Anniston 19-9 prior to playing Donoho. “We improved today,” Weaver coach Jeremy Harper stated. “I felt that the first couple of innings against Anniston were tired. We had trouble in getting going. Then we scored a huge inning which sparked us to continue for the rest of the game. “We played some ball up against a strong 2A team from Donoho. I was sure they’d to be competitive and we played well until the final game, when we lost a few count and we did a decent job which bodes well for our area play as well as the rest of the season.”
WEAVER 19 9 ANNISTON:Elijah Smith hit a walk-off homer that was inside-the-park and Weaver concluded the game by putting up a six-run sixth innings. Peyton Martin also hit an inside-the-park homer, and finished with two RBIs and two hits. Jaxson Bryant hit 3-for-4, scoring three RBIs and two runs and Weaver had two hits of Smith, Dalton Homesley, Christian Marturello and Zack Garner. He also had two hits which included a double as well as four RBIs. Dylan Goodson, Andrew Nelson and Rasheed Coleman each scored one hit and an RBI to Anniston. “We were pretty good however we made numerous errors on fields,” Anniston coach Casey Whitfield stated. “We could have done better in the absence of these errors on the field.. “That’s our best effort to done with the ball to date, but.”
