Everyone has a part in a basketball team. Will Ginn, the first-year Alexandria coach, would love to see his Valley Cubs figure out theirs.
Drake Davis was asked to shoot the ball at the buzzer on Tuesday afternoon. His shot reached the net and brought the Valley Cubs victory.
Will Ginn’s first signature win, Davis’ 3-pointer from the left side lifted the Cubs above No. 2 4A UMS – Wright 58-57 in Chelsea Christmas tournament
Davis stated, “I believe that’s my biggest shot so far.” I hadn’t hit any game-winners. Although I have hit some buzzer-beaters at halftime or quarter’s end, this is the largest one I have ever had.”
The Cubs beat Saks on Monday night with four 3-pointers by Davis in the first quarter. Although the junior guard wasn’t as hot Tuesday, he kept the shooter’s mind in check and was on fire at the end. He made three of his six last shots from behind the arc, and two in the final quarter.
The Cubs were behind in the first quarter and had to play catch-up most of the game. With less than one minute left, they managed to reduce the deficit to just two points in the third quarter. They tried to buy time by fouling, but the trap resulted in a turnover that gave them the chance to win.
Ginn decided to let the game play out, rather than calling it quits. Drake opened his mouth, the Cubs found Drake and he scored the game-winner just before the horn went off.
Davis stated that they tried to run a play in an attempt to get a quick layup to tie up the game. But it didn’t work out. They were actually face-guarding me, even though I just grabbed the ball. I was given some space by him so that we could get a rebound and tie it up if needed. But it went in. Although I was quite wild, I made sure that the time ran out before my coach yelled at me.
“That’s what you think of when you’re young in the driveway. This is what I told my mom in the far. It felt exactly like that, counting down, shooting it, and it goes in. Although it feels amazing when you are actually playing a game, you shouldn’t think about it too much. You’ll miss it if you think too much about it.
He didn’t miss it.
Davis scored 18 points to win the game. Kory Cargal scored 12. Bridges Simmons and Arthur Chitty each had 13 for the Bulldogs.
Ginn stated that Drake is a skilled shooter. “I told them that everybody has a role and not everyone has to do all of the scoring or shooting. There isn’t just one basketball, and everyone needs to know their role in order for everything to work together. I think we are starting to figure that out.
This was Ginn’s ninth win as Valley Cubs’ coach. But he doesn’t want it be the defining victory. In the grand scheme of things, they have a bigger game Thursday when Southside plays in an area game.
He said, “This is a win for us.” “I hope it gives us some confidence. “We are a young team and need some confidence.
“They are a quality team, and this win is a positive one for us. But this is not the state title. Although it was a great win, it wasn’t the state championship.

Regular season
JACKSONVILLE 84 CLEBURNE COUNTY47: Caden Johnson surpassed 1,000 points and the Golden Eagles had an offensive explosion in halftime on their way to their eighth consecutive win.
Johnson had to score 11 points in the first quarter to reach this milestone. He achieved the mark with an offensive rebound and putback at 3:45 remaining in the second half. Cam, his twin brother, finished the game with 18 points. He had four steals, five assists, five rebounds and five assists.
Tres Buzan, Jacksonville coach, said that Caden is a very special player. “We are privileged to have such a great group. Although he may not always get the highlight, or be the first to speak, he is vital to what we do.
He is a great player and a great teammate. He makes us go. He will take over when the rest of the guys are having a bad night. He is consistently one of our best friends, day in and out. He is a man we can rely on to do many things. We are so proud that he reached 1,000. We knew he was close to it, and it’s wonderful to see a great player with a great man reach such a significant milestone.
John Broom scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Jaleik Lang had 14 points, averaging four 3-pointers. Together, the four double-figure scorers shot 28-for-41 from field and 8-of-16 from 3-point range.
The Golden Eagles scored 71 and 40 points respectively in the first half and the second quarter thanks to so many clicks on all cylinders.
Buzan stated that it wasn’t special. We were playing our way, playing fast, getting up and down, and shooting the ball well. The guys did a great job sharing the ball in the first half. It was like they kept finding the right guy, finishing with the big shot or at rim with a free throw. We did everything. It was all about team play. You would see that there were 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 guys who made big contributions if we broken down the 71.
They gave up on pressing the ball in the second half, and handed the game to their bench.

Jonathan Miller, Saks coach, said that the team set up a play for Christian. The kids did the play perfectly – that is what I was most excited to see. It was designed for him to take that shot. He was patient and didn’t rush. He took his time, got to his spot, and shot the shot. That was what I was most excited to see.
